You drop your luggage off with the porters outside of the terminal. Then you can go do whatever you want. When you are ready to check in, just go inside the terminal.

 

Make sure you have your paper work with you though. I've seen where people forget and leave it in their luggage. Doing what you plan, your luggage could already be on the ship when you realize you needed something out of it.

Exactly right. Have done this a few times in SJ as well, most frequently when needing something from the CVS down the street and not wanting to schlep my bags around.
