lownslow Posted January 3, 2015 Author #26 Share Posted January 3, 2015 Well, it looks like we may do the hire car up to Orlando after the cruise.I've checked prices and we can save nearly $400 buy getting a hire car. Plus we won't have to worry about disembarking and boarding times. My husband will be the brave one driving though:p Anyone know the closest car hire to the cruise terminal?? Bit confusing online
Captain Canuck Posted January 3, 2015 #27 Share Posted January 3, 2015 cruise port in Fort Lauderdale is about 10 minutes from the airport. there are shuttle buses for most of the rental car companies that pick up at the cruise terminal. most rental car offices have rental car offices in the airport but the cars are off the airport property. last time we booked at the airport office online for Thrifty but got on the shuttle direct to a thrifty lot for the port. our reservation was at the offsite lot for the airport which was a few miles away...office had a car for us so just switched reservation from the other lot. just letting you know there are 2 thrifty lots close to the port. at disney world there is an onsite car rental place for alamo and national..there is a free shuttle from the disney hotels to this spot and as usual disney does this stuff well
BekkaW Posted January 3, 2015 #28 Share Posted January 3, 2015 Anyone know the closest car hire to the cruise terminal??Bit confusing online We always hire through Alamo. In FLL we used their shuttle to get from the cruise port to the airport, where we picked up the car. Just have your paperwork handy as the shuttle driver may wish to see it. laurenpie Posted January 4, 2015 #30 Share Posted January 4, 2015 We're also Australian and going on the Oasis in May, we've booked it all instead of going to a TA.. Their prices are often far higher that they charge compared to what we can get on the internet. We are arriving into Fort Lauderdale the day before the cruise, flying from LAX down with Virgin America. Staying at Hilton Fort Lauderdale, called the hotel direct and got a pretty good deal. Rare APDMOM Posted January 4, 2015 #33 Share Posted January 4, 2015 If you rent the car, be sure to either get the damage waiver (our last rental was about $13 per day to add this), or take detailed pictures of the car for any pre-existing damage before you drive off the lot. We had a bad experience with Budget when they accused us of adding a scratch to the car, which had been there before we rented the car. Fortunately for us, the agent who checked the car out to us had not followed procedure to complete one of the forms, so after much stress and hours on the phone, we were finally off the hook. Read up on advice from Clark Howard on car rental in the US. It is definitely an adventure to drive in the US, so it will add to your experience. It will give you some freedom to shop too. :)
