1st_timer_9ers Posted January 2, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2015 We are thinking abut going on our own. We want to know if anyone knows if we can taxi to Altun Ha and then water taxi to one of the Cayes? Maybe Caye Calker? Thanks for your help! Rare crewsweeper Posted January 2, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2015 Caye Caulker will probably be the only caye you'll probably be able to reach and return via water taxi. Outside chance of doing Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) but it's usually the same water taxi as Caye Caulker. The cayes that the ship excursions go to are usually reached via a private vendor excursion and don't have regular water taxi service. But I seriously doubt you'll be able to do both Altun Ha and Caye Caulker given tender and water taxi schedules. Check your ship's schedule, factor in whether or not there's a time difference between your ship's time and Belize time (most cruise lines stay on origination port time, Belize is on Central time and does not observe day light savings time), and then check the water taxi schedules on line (times are Belize times). It's about a 45-50 minute drive to Altun Ha from the tender pier, and you'll need about 10-15 minutes for the inbound tender once you leave ship, plus at least a good hour-hour and a half at the site. First tenders off are usually within 15 minutes of arrival time but can start later. Cruise ship excursions and priority boarding passengers have first crack at the tenders. Last tender from Belize City to the ship is generally scheduled for around 1 hour before the stated departure time for the port. If your ship's last tender is at 4:30 Eastern (3:30 Belize), you'll need to catch the 1:30 Belize water taxi back. That means to have any time on Caye Caulker you'll need to catch the 10:30 Belize water taxi to the Caye. That means leaving Altun Ha at 9:15 Belize, just to give a small cushion for traffic and to get tickets. So you'd need to grab a taxi around 7:15-7:30 Belize to be able to see Altun Ha. That would be tight on an Eastern time cruise ship as most first tenders are at the tender docks around 8:30-8:45 Eastern. If your ship does switch to local time, or if you're on an Central time departure ship, you might be able to catch a Noon water taxi out and the 3:30 taxi back.
