cathyb0424 Posted January 6, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 6, 2015 Hi All, My husband and I are going on the Princess Northern Europe cruise in May 2015. The cruise line excursion is $300 per person to go to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp & Berlin. From my research, I believe you have to go from Warnemunde, change trains at Rockport and then head to Oranienberg? I was wondering if anyone has gone there on their own by Train and I had a few questions.... 1) Is the train station at Warnemunde obvious and easy to find? 2) Can I pre-purchase tickets online? There seems to be 2 different trains, do I need to buy 2 different tickets for 2 different train services? Or is it just 1 ticket. And, approximately how much are the tickets? 3) How long should I anticipate walking around in the camp to see everything? 4) Is there an audio guided tour I can rent once I get there? and how much is it? If anyone could help with these question, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Floridiana Posted January 7, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 7, 2015 I can only answer a few questions. Even though you take several trains, you only have to buy one ticket in your first train station. Buy a return ticket. It's 72 Euro on the date I put in. The train ride is 2 1/2 hours from Warnemuende to Oranieburg, without waiting times, that is 5 hours both ways. I would not chance it within the timeframe of a one day cruise stop. Does the ship overnight in Warnemuende? Have you considered renting a car for the day? It's probably cheaper for two people and takes less time, about 2 hours one way. http://www.goeuro.de/search/NTRhZDJm...oyNDEyMzkzNA== Sachsenhausen has an English website. Maybe it answers your other questions: http://www.stiftung-bg.de/gums/
crabby apple Posted January 13, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 13, 2015 the walk from the Oranienburg station is about 15/20 mins as well if I remember correctly We did a tour from Berlin to Sachsenhausen in 2011 and without narration you may want to get a podcast or something

Maybe it answers your other questions: http://www.stiftung-bg.de/gums/ Hi, just to add a few details to the above. Assuming a berthing time of 7:00 and sailing time of 21:00. These times are taken from the official Port Schedule for 2015 http: http://www.rostock-port.de/en/cruise-shipping/port-calls/2014-port-calls.html Depart Warnemünde 7:38 or 8:03 at the latest. Depart Rostock Hbf. 8:34 Arrive Oranienburg 10:41 Walk 15 -20 mins to Sachsenhausen. Depart Oranienburg 15:11 This seems very early but the next train is too late to make boarding time. Arrive Rostock Hbf. 17:23 Trains to Warnemünde leave Rostock Hbf every 15 mins. The cost for 2 people travelling 2nd class would be 142.80 euros. As you can see this would give you a maximum of about 3hrs 45mins at the camp for about 6hrs travel time. As stated by Foridiana, car hire is the way to make best use of the available time but you have to worry about getting back in time should problems arise. The private tour companies also offer tours of Sachsenhausen and guarantee to get you back to the ship on time. Alternatively you could opt for a 'transport only' tour to Berlin if offered by your ship and take a local train to Sachsenhausen, about 20 mins from the centre of Berlin. Hope this helps with your planning. Happy cruising :) Anni Edited January 14, 2015 by Travelanni
