A dark suit will be fine, with shirt and tie of course ;)

On most cruises over 90% of men will wear a DJ but as Dave has said a dark suit and tie is just as acceptable.

P&O follow the dress code more strictly than other cruise lines. A chap got turned away in a very snazzy waist coat and tie as he didn't have a jacket on and was asked to return to his cabin to collect his jacket while they sat his wife. As long as you are wearing a jacket you will be fine so don't worry.

Thank God P&O still have some fashion standards, I hope the jacket was a requirement to hide his very snazzy waistcoat - he probably thought he looked the dogs doodah's when in reality he will have looked like Timmy Mallet DJ'ing at the Butlins end of season staff shindig circa 1983.

Personally I think people wearing a suit stand out more than those who don't bother at all, and just use the casual facilities on formal nights.

Yep, a nice dark suit allows for much more originality than the normal penguin uniform :D

Try navy blue with a nice baby blue or baby pink shirt (pink goes really well with dark blue) Remember that the tie should complement the suit and shirt so with a pink shirt I would have a restrained tie with red and blue in it.

If you wear a DJ the tie should be black and NEVER have a red cummerbund, it makes you look like a circus ringmaster. In fact with a DJ the only thing which can be other than black or white is the pocket square which can be in a colour to complement your partners dress.

My next cruise is 24 nights and there are 7 formals - aargh!. I will just leave the suit at home and pack more shirts. I have already heard the captains speech and never win a prize at the peninsular parties.

Very true. I have seen some horrors....

Green on St Patrick's day

Stars/stripes over thanksgiving

Multicoloured

Light up or other novelty

Hideous.

Or as a total change-my OH has a Nehru suit (same type jackets as the md wears) He has taken it on a few cruises and after we have got over the MD saying snap as we go into dinner, no one else at all has commented on it. (tell a lie someone once told him how really smart he looked-which he did) Added bonus is as he wears a similar collared shirt no tie/bowtie can be worn, so comfort there.

Or it makes you look as if you have just popped in on the way home from the office.

Just in contrast to waddling about in the penguin colony :D

Maybe we are making progress to one of those magnificent DRESS CODE ROWS, we havn't had one for ages ;););)

Do people still wear suits for the office. I wouldnt know as my husband has never worked in one so for him to wear a suit and tie it has to be special occasions e.g weddings funerels and cruises!!!

Yes they do. But some passengers don't know how to dress in a suit to look like they are on a cruise and end up looking like they are at work in the office of their local council.

Many others in shirt and tie look like fat coach drivers.

Don't worry, asking any question on here tends to start an argument.

Just continue to not use smiley's in your posts and we'll get along just fine.

I don't think a red and blue tie would look good with a pink shirt Dave.....red and pink just clash....pink and blue would be much better!

Looks like we'll be on the same cruise in February....John will be wearing his DJ as usual!!

Tiny red dots on a blue ground!

I hear they are renaming the Yacht and Compass the Mary Celeste for that cruise. with 16 sea days I am loading 8 new books on my kindle. It is going to be quiet. ;)

To answer the OP, more than 90% of people wear a bow tie, but a lot of those are wearing it with an ordinary dark suit and an ordinary shirt. Not the full kit and caboodle.

Get a ready made bow tie, and you're set. If anyone notices, they won't care; if they notice and do care, they're not the sort of person you want to spend time with anyway! ;)

I sailing P&O for the first time in a few months & am not taking a suit.

I will eat in the buffet on the formal nights where I assume casual will be the norm, can someone tell me if the bar areas have any restriction on these nights or will I have to have an early night?! ;)

Depends on the ship but for most the bars do carry the same dress code as the restaurants.

It depends on the ship but usually the majority of bars and all the entertainment venues welcome evening casual dress on formal nights.

Tell us which ship you are cruising on and we can be more specific.

Ooos, i should pay attention, it is Ventura:o

Ventura has 2 dress codes, evening casual and black tie. On black tie evenings Metropolis and the Red Bar are the ones with restrictions. Bars with evening casual will be Tazzine, The Exchange, the Glasshouse, Tamerind club, Havana, plus the outside bars.

The waterside buffet is free but you could try the Beach House american diner or the Glasshouse which apart from being a bar, serves food at lunchtime and in the evenings.

We are just back from the Caribbean, we were on Ventura, we dressed for 3 of the formal nights but didn't do the 4th and we felt like outcasts, we were all smartly dressed but just not formal. You won't get served at most of the bars or be allowed at any entertainment but you will get served at outside areas.

Eh! i think you must be mistaken.

Which 'most of the bars' did you not get served in?

You were not allowed in the Theatre, Casino Tamarind club, Havana?

Yuo were not wearing tatty jeans or sports gear were you?
