Casino on Breakaway

After many years of playing Let it Ride in the various NCL casinos, I recently played it on the Breakaway. Quite to my surprise and disappointment, there was a new rule that I had never encountered. While playing cards, the players may only use one hand to pick up their cards. Myself and the other players found it to be quite awkward. My question is, is this a rule only on the Breakaway or has this rule spread throughout the fleet? Does anyone know why this would be put into effect?

Just off Gem. Same thing. Can only use one hand to view cards. Perhaps they are afraid the great Chip Romero or other magicians using their slight of hand skills to cheat....lol

This is standard in every casino I've ever been in from Atlantic City to Vegas and in between. I've never been to a casino that didn't have this rule.

Wow! I'm so suprised! I regularly play in Parx, Valley Forge and Atlantic City. Was in Las Vegas last January at MGM and on the Gem last February....have never encountered this until this January on the Breakaway. Thanks for the info!

Completely and utterly disagree with anyone who said this is standard in land based casinos. We take weekend trips Borgata in AC 4-5x a year for the past 5 years. Play at other AC casinos when down there. Have been to MGM and Wynn in Vegas probably a dozen times in my life. Foxwoods and Mohegan again about a dozen.

None, I repeat NONE of them have the 1 hand rule for any of the card table games (let it ride, 3 card poker, 4 card poker, any of the texas holdem games, pai gow, etc). Everyone always squeezes and squints at their cards when looking at them with 2 hands, hoping that 3rd card gives them 3 of a kind or a straight flush.

We have been on 4-5 NCL ships, everyone on them have this rule, and it is the only place I have ever heard of it. Can't speak for other cruise lines, have never been on any. But land based casinos, certainly do not have this rule.

Same here. Was at Harrah's in AC last month and this was not the case. Can't even imagine how you would look at your cards with just one hand. This is ridiculous.

Yes, it is quite awkward and uncomfortable! I had to remind the dealer numerous times to deal to my right as I couldn't do it at all with my left hand. If you forget and accidently use 2 hands, you are immediately reprimanded by the dealer!

Atlantic City?? You are absolutely 100% incorrect. I am a diamond player with total rewards. I play several casinos in Atlantic City, SEVERAL times per month. This "one handed" rule does not exist in any of the AC casinos I go to.

I was on the Breakaway last year and played Let it Ride every night and not once asked to hold cards with one hand. In the Connecticut casinos, the only rules are you have to hold the cards over the table and must not look at them again after the first of the dealers cards are turned over. In Vegas, some casinos made you pull back your bet by swiping the cards towards you. In CT, you can use whatever motion you want (within reason).

I am on the breakaway next month, I hope they change this rule.

On BA in January, played Let it Ride, and the one hand rule was heavily enforced. Because I play in Vegas frequently I wasn't thrown off by this rule but my husband who never plays was constantly being reminded (and sometimes in a not so friendly way).

I have played in some casinos where I've been allowed to pick up the cards with both hands and I've been in some casinos (a much larger population) where one handed play is required. I was once at a table in Vegas where all seats were friends of mine and the one handed rule was quickly set aside as we settled in for a long night of play. Lots of rules and sometimes they shift a bit, but the fun is still the same :)

I recall the one handed rule on NCL boats. Let It Ride is my favorite table game. Actually, one time in Vegas, one of the hotels, I think Luxor, you can't touch the cards at all and everyone's was dealt face up. Was really strange and almost took the fun out of it, but gave you a better idea on straights and flushes.

I can understand where CAS is coming from but they would unlikely do that in baccarat card games with higher rollers and high stakes in prohibiting the players from touching, and often bending & squeezing the card.

Seen casinos imposed those house rules and then reverse themselves and allow 2 handed play, as long as the cards do not cross the table lines and stay in sight. Players trying to tilt the odds have been known to "mark" the "high" cards using sharp finger nails, etc. to gain the edge ... if NOT catched by eyes in the sky.
