Rare Crew News Posted February 16, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 16, 2015 (edited) Need recent info on att cell phone coverage in the Caribbean ,not on the shipI spoke to ATT not sure if it is worth it to get their international plan.Do most ports haveWiFi. We are on Zuiderdam Panama Canal. What has been your expierience .Thank You I can confirm that AT&T had excellent, free, coverage in St Thomas US V.I. and Puerto Rico. All other coverage included either international roaming or shipboard supplements. Most ports have free WiFi locations. Just ask a crew member where they go. We really enjoyed the Panama Canal although the climate was humid. If the sun is shining on your stateroom, keep the curtains closed to prevent your furniture from absorbing the heat and overpowering your A/C ability to cool your room. summersigh Posted February 16, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 16, 2015 I can confirm that AT&T had excellent, free, coverage in St Thomas US V.I. and Puerto Rico. Ditto on St Thomas and PR We were planning on taking the same trip until a bout of health problems had us canceling. We planned to buy some minutes on board or use an internet café in ports to use our tablet to check email in case of emergencies and to let family know we were ok. I often set up a gmail account just to use during the cruise to avoid having to sift through ordinary emails. Prior to the cruise I send that address to family and/or friends who might need to reach us while we're away.
jtl513 Posted February 16, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 16, 2015 None of the ports on the 10 or 11 day Sunfarer cruises have free AT&T coverage.
jankn Posted February 16, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 16, 2015 we just returned from that cruise on Friday, last week....I had ATT cell phone when we did the exact same cruise last year and had their international plan....it was great, off the ship, a reasonable rate too. this year I have Verizon and their plan was t as good so I made phone calls in Aruba, there is a large hotel/casino combination,,, on the Main Street after have gone thru the security and get onto the Main Street passing thru the town, turning right and walking a couple of blocks.....everyone referred us there, but I don't recall the name of it....:-(. Also, in Curaçao there is a McDonalds in their downtown that also has great WIFI, got a clear connection rifht away....keep your phone wifi OFF on board or you will get charged for all the junk mail etc that appears every day via wifi....I also had it on airplane mode.... Rare POA1 Posted February 17, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 17, 2015 Thanks everyone for their input You can also check Trip Advisor. They usually have discussions about cell coverage that are a little more robust because they'll have participants who are on longer, land-based vacations in a given port. Also, make a list of who your carriers partners are in each port. You want to make sure you're connecting to the correct provider. You usually will, but it's always a good idea to be sure.
