Does anyone know if either cingular, or t-mobile will work in Japan or China? I know roaming would be involved and it would be pricey, but am interested in having a phone in case of emergency. If I know either will not work for sure, I will go the Global Phone rental route.

No, definitely not in Japan. They use a completely different system. And China uses the same sytem as Europe. So you really need TWO phones.

I have the $99.00 special and it has worked every place I have ever used it (don't use very often in US-the phone number is a UK phone #, so if you use it in the US, you are essentially making an international long distance call)

Cingular told me that my RAZR V3 phone will work in China and cost $1.99/minute.

We had both a Global (UK) Phone and USA Cingular Blackberry. Both worked perfectly in China but not at all in Japan.

Hi Sue! We recently purchased phones from Verizon. For a one month charge of around $5, we can make calls in China (in country and to the US) for .20 a minute. We did have to call Verizon and access the service. We are leaving for a Viking tour on September 14.
