SUNNY D Posted March 5, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 5, 2015 Considering if its worth purchasing the UDP on our upcoming alaska cruise in June on the Sun. Its a 7 day cruise so 6 nights/dinners and we will likely eat in port 2 of those nights since we dont leave port till 8pm. This leaves us with only 4 nights/dinners onboard which would mean the $119pp cost of the UDP would not be worth it BUT are any of the options open for lunch? We have 2 sea days we will be onboard for lunch so just weighing our options. We have never cruised NCL before. We enjoy eating out and it seems the UDP options have better food from what I have been reading here. Also, can we make advance reservations online and when... even if we dont purchase the UDP and pay as we go so to speak? Thanks for any info! Demonyte Posted March 5, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 5, 2015 (edited) Cruises are always counted in nights you spend onboard - your cruise is a 7-night cruise, so you can have 7 dinners onboard. Speciality restaurants are usually closed for lunch, there are some exceptions but the norm is that speciality restaurants are open for dinner only. After you have booked UDP and the cruise is at least 90 days away, you can book speciality restaurants for free online at MyNCL - if you make the reservations without having UDP, you need to pay cover charges with a credit card when making the reservation. Solararc Posted March 5, 2015 #3 Share Posted March 5, 2015 I would just pay as you go, if you are only going to possibly have 4 meals for a charge Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thank you for the info. Your right, I was mistaken, we have 7 nights so 5 nights we will be on board for dinner not including the 2 nights we will eat in port. I suppose if there are no lunch options available we will opt to pay as we go instead of purchasing the UDP.
Carnac767 Posted March 6, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 6, 2015 Only Cagney's is open for lunch, and that's only for the folks in suites. There's no charge for them.

Cagney's or Moderno being used as a special venue for VIP/suite passengers on older ships has nothing to do with regular speciality dining, bringing it up just causes confusion when talking about the use of UDP. Solararc Posted March 6, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 6, 2015 The OP has reached their decision it would seem, do VIP still get the Breakfast and Lunch in specialty venues? *Living large one week at a time*
Demonyte Posted March 6, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 6, 2015 The OP has reached their decision it would seem, do VIP still get the Breakfast and Lunch in specialty venues? On non-megaships, yes. On megaships (Epic and newer) the Haven restaurant (inside Haven) is AFAIK only available to Haven guests (on megaships all suites have Haven access). Demonyte Posted March 6, 2015 #11 Share Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) OP was asking about the Sun, but thanks for being the CC police. Thank you for your input. Whether you like it or not, IMO it is unnecessary to confuse newbies here with completely irrelevant information. VIP/suite dining is not speciality dining, so it has nothing to do with questions about UDP. Also most things frequently discussed here apply to the whole fleet so while OP might be asking specifically about Sun, it helps also others when generally applicable answers are clearly formatted as such.
