jenniferop Posted March 12, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 12, 2015 Just saw on a copy of the Navigator that there is a castaway cay 5k...is this done on every cruise that goes to castaway cay or just on specific times of year? Looking at a family cruise for May 2016 for my niece's high school graduation and DH would love to do the 5k but the navigator I saw was for Feb 2015... It's done on all cruises, unless weather, or other issues, cause it to be canceled. You sign up once onboard. Be aware it's just a "fun run" not sanctioned by any running organization. Generally all participants get a little plastic medal.

moki'smommy Posted March 12, 2015 #4 Share Posted March 12, 2015 (edited) As above, all cruises, provided weather and docking issues don't prohibit it.m Sign up is typically at the Port Adventures desk--check your Navigator or just ask them. Free, everyone gets a little piece of plastic. You can purchase a t-shirt if desired. They had some nicer medals from the paid run in January (they had a cruise where the run was coordinated with the WDW marathon) and are reportedly using the nicer ones till they run out. When you sign up, you'll get instructions as to meeting place, etc. We've seen it done where you meet in one of the lounges on the ship and go off as a group (like an excursion group) and also where they designated a spot on the island just off the ship. monty913 Posted March 16, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2015 We did this in Sept 2013. It was really fun, but very very hot. Keep hydrated. Also, there is no where to lock up any stuff/valuables, just a big bucket to keep stuff. So if you plan on hitting the beach after the run, have a family/friend take your stuff or go back the ship after the race. We didn't bring anything with us and went back to our cabin after the run. The start/finish is kind of a hike from/to the ship, so we felt like we wasted a lot of time. Also check the navigator for when/where to sign up. In December 2014 we skipped CC due to high winds-the 5k was obviously cancelled, but they still gave everyone bibs and had then run it on deck 4. moki'smommy Posted March 16, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 16, 2015 Good information about running it on deck 4. I've never seen that because we've never been unable to dock at Castaway. EVERYTHING is a hike from the ship...but at least the ship docks rather than needing to tender in like most companies do.
mollyeilis Posted March 21, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 21, 2015 They actually have a much better medal now. They created it in time for the paid 5Ks for the two specific cruises after the January marathon weekend and the Princess Half marathon weekend. After all ships were stocked with it (as far as I can tell) they started giving it out for all of the free 5Ks as well. It's rubber, like the ones you get for a paid 5K through rundisney, and it's super-cute. Not the hard plastic Mickey ear medallions that they also give for trivia and hoops-shooting contests anymore.
