Has anyone driven on Elba

The roads on the island are fine, but not conducive to speed. I would definitely recommend a map and that you leave plenty of time. The most interesting route from Portoferraio would take you through Procchio to Marina di Campo. From there, a trip over Monte Capanne to Poggio is quite spectacular. From there you can go down to the pretty port of Marciana Marina, which is well worth a wander.

If time allows, it is possible to circumnavigate the island, or at least the Western half of it. To the east, there is Porto Azzuro and the old mining workings. There is lots to see and some very attractive resorts on the South coast. Driving is much the best way to appreciate this underrated island.

CLOU -

according to the Michelin Guide, the Western loop suggested by Fifer should take about 5 hours. The Eastern loop should take about three hours.

We are leaning towards the Napoleon villa excursion, but may see you at the car rental agency...
