thecruiserofships Posted March 28, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 28, 2015 While the Liberty of the Seas (Freedom Class) coming to Galveston marks a capacity increase from the Navigator of the Seas, it would be great for Galveston to have an Oasis Class ship homeported. Some things would definitely change if Galveston if an Oasis Class ship were to come. I had posted this a while back to the Royal Caribbean boards, but I thought I would share this here too because it pertains to Galveston & Gulf Coast Cruising. I love thinking of things like this! This is a blog post I wrote about what Galveston might look like if an Oasis Class ship gets deployed to the port someday. Most my writing is common sense mixed with logic about what would need to happen and change if one of these "behemoths" were to come to Galveston. Here is my imagination, with logic and common sense, helping me get an idea what an Oasis class ship would do to Galveston: http://www.embarkandaway.com/general-cruise-blog/what-galveston-might-look-like-with-an-oasis-class-cruise-ship Of course, at this time there are no known plans to the public to deploy an Oasis Class ship to Galveston. However, this could be an option in the future. Would you want the Oasis of the Seas or any Oasis class vessel to come to Galveston? I know I do, and I would probably book it in a heartbeat. ssb Posted March 28, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2015 Bring it on ! It should fit in the port based on size of ship and the port. The present contract provides for a second or even larger ship . And based on what RCL is paying ünder contract it should provide either to make porting in Galveston more economically feasible. And to compete with Carnival. gofeo Posted August 29, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 29, 2015 First big problem is that turning basin is not large enough for one of those ships. Navigator comes in and turns around so that it can be headed out at departure. There is only one way in and out of cruise port.
ssb Posted August 30, 2015 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2015 (edited) Here are some facts I have found: Draw your own conclusion. Comparison of Class Ships ....................... Overall Class............. Length Ft*.... Draft Ft Voyager.............. 1021......... 29 Quantum............ 1142......... 29 Freedom............. 1112......... 29 Oasis.................. 1181......... 31 Galveston Port Channel Narrowest Width 1200 and wider at turning basin Minimum Depth 45 * not at waterline and relative to turn around 69 ft in length Difference between Freedom And Oasis Class Ships Up the channel is a turning basin, between the the Ferry Landing and Yacht Club, where the ships turn around sometimes now. There is ample width space and depth there. Also see a web site about Marinas Texas, that has an aerial view reflecting same of Galveston Channel. SuiteTraveler Posted September 1, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 1, 2015 I must admit that I would absolutely LOVE it if RCCL would port an Oasis class ship or even a Quantum class ship out of Galveston. I would also like to see NCL put one of their newest ships in Galveston. I'm just thrilled that Liberty is coming! But as popular as these cruises are, I really hope to see a future, where this port expands and many more ships sail from Galveston.

Galveston Cruiser Posted September 2, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 2, 2015 First big problem is that turning basin is not large enough for one of those ships. Navigator comes in and turns around so that it can be headed out at departure. There is only one way in and out of cruise port. Which is typical of most ports! longhorn2004 Posted September 14, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 14, 2015 While I think its possible for a Oasis class ship in Galveston (Port Canaveral is getting one this winter), the terminal facilities will have to be upgraded in a major way.
