Room Service No Longer Free - NCL Starts $7.95 Charge Per Order

I have to admit the new room service menu really does offer more choices than the old one. If I ever have to self-quarantine myself again on another trip, I honestly won't mind paying $7.95 for a tea kettle and some of salads, sandwiches, burgers, entrees and/or cheese platter.... especially the steak and potatoes, that would cheer up anyone...

It IS nice to be able to have those things in your room if you are not feeling well.

Over the years I've seen many of those items in complimentary room service menus on various lines. And yes i do occasionally notice those items disappear and reappear in a different for a charge. Not just one line.

I think you've cruised 1 or 2 years, so your baseline and expectations are different. My first cruise was 1990 so a much different perspective on what used to be an inclusive vacation. You would be hard pressed to pay for much beyond drinks, photos, excursions, or spa. Well the casino but thats another matter. Everything else was built in and it wasn't a matter of choosing to pay for something or not. It was more about just doing things and never having to think or worry about extra costs. It was a really relaxing vacation and maybe if it wasn't the height of luxury it still felt great. So we have two different baselines and perspectives to go from and when I'm always being presented with an optional fee or keeping track of costs on everything while on vacation I don't find it relaxing. It's why I don't like going to theme parks. It's the opposite of relaxing. Not how I want to spend my time. It's got me researching all inclusive beach resorts. Toes in sand beer in hand phone won't work for a week. Sounds good.

Cruising is becoming more like a theme park and less like a beach resort.

When you booked your cruise there was almost nothing on the room service menu. You still get the same free continental breakfast and now real food options for a single fee for as much as you want to order for the family.

When we booked we had all day room service with a fee charged only for late night orders. We had real food before: salad, sandwiches, kids menu, desserts and standard drinks. Now you get simple continental items and only up to 10am, not anytime outside the late night window.

It is a takeaway, not a give as NCL is trying to couch it and as you've accepted.

It's just not a big deal to me

Looking at the expanded room service menu I am hoping it goes into effect on Jewel class ships before our cruise in a couple weeks. If you have ordered room service in the last few years you really shouldn't be too upset at this potential change. I would gladly pay a few bucks to get higher quality food (I hope its better than the current stuff on the RS menu). I would also like to think delivery will be faster as there will probably be fewer room service orders.
