Smoke

Thanks to those few who actually responded. Regardless of your opinion of smoking I hardly think all these rude responses were necessary. If you don't want read about smoking then maybe just skip threads about smoking. I myself got tired of reading about room service costs so I stopped reading that thread.

How bad is the smoke really on the getaway? A lot of reviews mention it. I'm allergic and I'm wondering how this will impact our trip? We haven't booked yet so this has us thinking twice. This focus on smoking areas all around the ship seems so outdated to me. Most cruise lines have all but eliminated smoking. I just don't get it.

I see you've been on Holland:eek: How did you survive it with your "allergies"?

I don't see why people focus on "just" the reviews with a mention of smoke. There are many many posts about low or no impact, yet some people pay no attention to them or choose not to remember them.

I can only speak of the breakaway. But I don' t know if the areas to smoke are the same on the sister ship getaway.

Since smoking on the breakaway is allowed in the casino, you could avoid walking through it. I would personally find out the exact spots on the ship that you are allowed to smoke and just avoid them. I only smelled smoke around the areas that were designated. So if you avoid them you will be fine. The ships are plenty big to find areas that are smoke free.

I found this on another thread:

On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Here is a thread started for getaway smoking areas. It may help you.

I've not been on the Getaway, but have the Epic. The central atrium area was a problem for me, but I am HIGHLY sensitive to smoke with eyes and nose running like a sieve when I'm near even a hint of the stuff. I learned to avoid the area and enjoyed the rest of the ship. I even had problems in the restaurant below the atrium.

All that said, I haven't yet written the superships off. I enjoyed the Epic a lot, despite avoiding the central area. I have also found it varies by voyage, how many smokers abound. I've been on the Sun twice. Once with no problems with smoke, and once where it seemed to permeate all the way up the atrium. It depends on who is on board.

On my last cruise on the Sun, there was a balcony smoker nearby. Mostly I sluffed it off as he seemed to limit himself to one at a time. One time, I had the cabin door open while the steward was cleaning and it was wafting into my cabin, making both cabin and balcony unusable. (I had told the steward to go ahead and finish when I arrived while he was there.) I simply hollered out and asked the smoker to please come back later. Problem solved. He left immediately.

I would also note here, that my steward was all over it. He was animate they are not to smoke out there and was leaning over the rail attempting to find the perpetrator.

All this to basically say, if you really want a nonsmoking atmosphere, head to Celebrity. If you can tolerate moderate levels, or don't mind going out of your way to avoid some major areas, NCL should be fine, unless it is one of the smokier voyages. MMV
