Gratuities on board

I have been trying to find out if gratuities are posted to your account, as on most cruise ships, or if they use the envelope system as they did on our last Viking river cruise. I also found one reference to shipboard gratuities being included. Knowing ahead of time would be useful because you need to know how much cash to take for that purpose. Can anyone help?

Of course we don't know for sure until we actually get onboard, but what I read from Viking is that they will automatically add their recommended amount to your onboard account unless you ask them not to. Or, you can ask that a different amount be put on your onboard account, either more or less than the recommended amount. You can then use your credit card to pay your onboard account. If you ask that they not add it automatically to your account, they will give you envelopes. What I read implied that you had to make this decision when you checked in.

Will post on the "Live" thread when we get onboard how it actually works.
