cab prices in Belize

What is the going rate for cabs in Belize from the tourist village? Are they safe? Are fares government regulated?

Thank you---particularly interested in RT cost to the Zoo.

My family and I had trouble finding an actual taxi. I am pretty travel savvy but got the run around from police. We asked the security officers at the pier where to get the taxi, and she directed us to a tour company who wouldn't quit hassling us...wanted over 80.00 to go to the zoo...good grief!

There are some cabs at the village that are relatively safe, when I was there last, the cab fair were steep, more expensive than many places. $50 for a half hour ride, but that was two years ago...I didn't go to the zoo.

The US Department of State website says to only use cabs w/ green license plates.
