Help! Can't Decide - Pompeii/Capri or Pompeii/Amalfi ????

Recommended Posts

Itsanita,

If you are still looking for a guide for Rome, I would feel 100% comfortable recommending Claudio Caponera of limoinrome.com. He is a middle-aged Rome native who knows his city completely and loves it and its history even more completely. He was a wonderful guide, had an amazing amount of knowledge, and his English was excellent. We had to laugh because he said he wanted to come to the US this winter to help understand the character of the American people. We asked where he had selected and he said he thought Charleston, SC! We mentioned to him that he might have a little trouble with the accent and that the beautiful homes there are not exactly typical of the rest of the US, but that he would love it.

BTW, Claudio does not ask for any money up front. He charged us $460 Euros for four people for a full day tour that included picking us up at the port in Civatavecchia and dropping each couple off at their separate hotels.

Enjoy your trip. Amalfi coast is breathtaking and I would do it on a private tour versus ship's tour. Navigating a 36' bus around the bends and narrow roads of the Amalfi coast is an amazing feat, but somewhat harrowing for the passengers. We tipped the bus driver well for his skill.

We are booked for our tour...but now are wondering if the time spent doing the amalfi coast DRIVE is worth it. We have done the Pacific Coast highway and The Road to Hana in Maui. Has anyone done these highways as well as the Amalfi Coast? Are they each different or as her son said...if you've seen one you've seen them all?? Any opinions?

We did the Amalfi Coast/Pompeii tour with Benvenuto. one of the two highlights of our 12 day cruise of the Med! We stopped in Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Absolutely gorgeous!

Forget the "you've seen one, you've seen them all" attitude - it's not the same as the Pacific Coastal highway for sure. We were in Maui and hiked Haleakala crater and don't recall the Road to Hana at all so either 1) we didn't go that route or 2) it wasn't as spectacular as the Pacific Coastal highway for us. :D

Try renting the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" as the star spends time in Positano. I believe there's even a movie called Positano (or Il Positano) which might be about that area as well.

Haven't been to Capri (crossed that off our list as I was afraid of getting seasick) so can't compare it to Capri for you.

Good luck deciding.
