Sunday in Stavanger

We're going to the Fjords in 4 weeks on Azura. As we leave on Friday our first port is Stavanger on the Sunday. We haven't booked a trip and will do our own thing. Just wondering if anyone knows whether things will be open on a Sunday or whether it may be best to do a trip? Many thanks

I think even without shops being open you will enjoy Stavanger. Its a lovely town with its old town right next to the ships berth. A nice town to wander.

If you fancied a trip there is a boat service through the Lysefjord to the bottom of pulpit rock. Its not cheap but cheaper than many ships tours. Takes about 3 hours.

We stopped there a few years ago on a QM2 trip. It was raining. In Scotland, we say dreich.

The ship was leaving at 3:00 pm, and "all aboard" was 2;30 pm. All the shops were closed. There was an outdoor market that opened at 2:00 pm.

You would have thought that the local agent would have liaised with the local market traders or Chamber of Commerce. There was two and a half thousand pax eager to spend money but could only watch the local traders set up, as they headed back to the ship.

If you like wee pretty old wooden houses then it's a great place. Otherwise, stay on board.

We like Stavanger - pretty rose covered clapboard houses and cobbled streets in the Old Town (might be a bit early for the floral adornments), picturesque candy coloured old shopping area on the other side of the Harbour (picturesque - worth a photo stop even if closed), a Cathedral and attractive lake to wander around. Granted in bad weather the town won't look so attractive but an idea then may be to go to the Oil Museum which we found very interesting much to our surprise.

According to the website it is open every day September through to the end of May from 10.00 - 16.00 and on Sundays until 18.00. So obviously quite popular for Sunday visits. Iirc there were Senior rates too - we went in the morning and the ticket was for all day so we gave them to our friends who used them in the afternoon.

There is a Sardine Canning Museum which was open on a Sunday when we were there - and very enjoyable actually! A very modest entry fee and if you are a senior citizen in your own country, you get a concession rate there too. There is a delightful little cafe out in the back. http://www.museumstavanger.no/museums/the-norwegian-canning-museum

Walking around Stavanger was a very enjoyable experience in itself and I would certainly think it would be a waste to stay on board.

We first walked round the far side of the port/harbour - where the oil and gas museum is and which was open on Sunday - and explored that part of the town and the church.

We then came back to the ship for lunch and to use the loo!!! Loos have to be paid for in Norway so you need the necessary coin and the ship was so close that we went back.

After lunch we then explored the old town which was right next to where we were berthed and visited the Canning Museum. We had a lovely day!

We were there on a Sunday there were a few cafes open but not much else. There was a tour outside the dock so we decided to do it, abit of a waste of time really as we could have walked it. We ended up in the canning factory which was quite good and a stroll around the old village was really nice very pretty.

Plenty to see on a Sunday. There is the Old Town ( white wooden houses) usually very near where the ship docks. There is also :- a round town Hoho bus which is very quirky; the Cathedal which is just across the way from the tourist office; the Sardine Canning Factory which is more interesting than it sounds; the Petroleum Museum which is absolutely brilliant and has a 3D exhibition and is very hands on such as you 'can be' on board a North sea oil rig; there is the beautiful lake with walks around etc etc. You will find lots to see and do BUT go prepared for various types of weather. It can be beautiful but it can also tip it down.

When we went August 2012 there were shops open, because we bought a Christmas present for my in-laws and shopped in other stores along the quay opposite to the one on which we (Aurora) and Queen Victoria were berthed - touristy shops, but also glass/pottery, jewellery, knitwear...

Endorse everything all OPs have said about Oil Museum, cathedral, lake and Old Town. Our dinner companions went on a boat trip to tropical gardens which departed from a spot on the harbour wall just a few paces from our berth. They said it was fantastic and much cheaper than the same organised by P&O.
