You will see trading lanyards on the CMs who hand you the wipes outside the restaurants at breakfast and lunch, CMs at Guest Services, and in the shops. The deal is that when it gets too busy, the lanyards go into a drawer and sometimes they forget to take them out. SO....if you see GS with no line, you are quite free to ask if they do pin trading. Same in the shops. They just won't do it when they have a line of other guests waiting.

Forgive my ignorance but what is pin trading

Pin trading...you buy a little piece of metal with an embossed Disney character or scene on it and a spike on the back that can punch onto a lanyard/book/whatever. These can be purchased at any Disney gift shop in the parks, on the ship, etc. or on e-bay. Cost from Disney is anywhere from about $6 (in a set) to about $15 (for limited edition, etc.) You can save them , trade them, etc.

There are set rules for trading with cast members. First, a CM cannot refuse a trade (they are DCL's pins, not the CMs) unless they are already wearing that same pin on their lanyard. Colored lanyards are for kids under a certain age only; black lanyards trade with anyone. ONLY Disney pins with the Disney logo are to be traded (there are counterfeits out there). Pin trading with CMs originated as a way to get people to approach and speak with CMs. Conversations can be as limited as "Can I trade you my Mickey for your Donald?" but also provide an opportunity for more involved conversations. "Is it fun to steer this big ship?" or "Is it cold in your country?" or whatever.....

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply. Is this popular on Disney Ships?

It is available IF a guest wishes to participate. It is very popular with Disney--they love to sell a 39 cent piece of metal for $8! You won't be missing much if you decide to not do pin trading--there are other times (like the Captain's reception) when you can talk with the officers, etc. On the other hand, some people are really into it.

Some people collect all pins while others focus on a particular character or movie.
