koopmanclan Posted July 18, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2015 We are sailing on 9th Aug with 2 children. We are doing the ports on our own as we don't know how the children will cope with the heat and want the option to go back to the ship if needed. Please can anyone advise us of how to get to the attractions. Hoping to get the train to Rome, Pompeii.....can you get shuttles from the port to the stations? or do we need to get a taxi? Thanks in advance

Rare steamboats Posted July 19, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 19, 2015 In Civitavecchia there´s a free shuttle within the harbor. From the shuttle stop there are three options to get to the train station: - 20 min walk (the tourist information has a map) - public bus (0.80 Euro single ticket) - shuttle bus (2 Euro single ticket) There´s a little shop at the corner which is selling tickets (and newspapers and more). There you can already buy the BIRG ticket for the train which includes public transportation in Rome. Tickets for the public bus can be purchased there too. But the shuttle bus might be the better option. The shuttle bus is fairly new. It didn´t exist in late May when we were there. There are also two options in Naples: Take the tram 1 to Garibaldi and walk up to the station Porta Nolana for the Circumvesuviana train which goes to Ercolano, Pompeii Scavi and Sorrento. There´s also a SITAsud bus at Piazza Immacolata to the right of the cruise terminal building which is going to Pompeii. steamboats

tidygirl Posted July 20, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 20, 2015 I did a review of "Our families views of our Med cruise" in Oct 2014 sorry I don't know how to do links. We did Rome and Florence (not sure if you are going here?) on our own by train. If you need more specific information let me know as I do believe I wrote it all down. Just be aware do not carry passports or money in easy accessible bags, or even pants pockets! We carried everything important in money belts under our clothes and kept small amounts of cash loose in pockets! On our one train ride a lady was trying to feel in hubbies pockets, but all he had was an umbrella covered by a coat wrapped around his waist, she also kept using her finger to try to feel in his front pocket! His uncle on a previous trip had a teenage girl about get his wallet out of his front pocket and he's one of the most cautious people I know! Not trying to scare you, but help to inform you to use your head and realize it can happen to you so be careful and aware of your surroundings! We had an awesome trip! koopmanclan Posted July 21, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) We have looked into a variety of options and decided to go for a bus only round trip only. We don't want to do the walk to the train station with the kids in the heat and not have a reserved seat on the train for them. http://www.smartcruisetours.com Then we can do our own things in Rome....it's the unknown...so hope it all works out! Booking for the Colosseum, and then plan to do the fountain, piazza , lunch and a wander to take it all in.
