We are on a river cruise next March from Beijing to Shanghai and will need Visas. However we can't apply for them before 90 days because they are only good for so long and we will be in China for 2 weeks. You can't apply for them till you know your flight numbers and dates.

We are sailing on the 9/11/15 transpacific then ends in Shanghai. I have yet to get my return flight back to the US. Has anyone applied for a Chinese Visa without having their return tickets yet?

They require proof of exit travel reservation. You can apply prior to 90 days out. They stamp your visa on entry and you can get approval for various lengths of time. We used an agency Genvisa and had good results. You must be VERY careful to include EVERYTHING they request or you get it back. There is a lot of info required. You can call the Chinese embassy and talk with them or call visa company and they are very helpful. Good luck!
