Periscoping on a cruise?

Has anyone used or seen someone else use periscope on a cruise? I'm thinking about doing a Live report on my Oasis cruise in September since I will probably buy the wifi package (OMG! Why would you buy a wifi package??? I cruise to stay disconnected!!!).

Anyway, for those that do not know what periscope is, it is a free app on your phone or tablet where you can film live video. People that follow you can watch live and type in comments and questions that can be answered in real time.

I thought it would be fun to do this maybe 2-3 times a day for like 5-10 minutes each time.

The video stays on periscope for 24 hours so even if you were not logged on when I was live you could go back and view it.

I´m not a fan of all this live posting, but to each their own.

The only time I´m going to worked up about it if it affects me and my privacy.

So I hope you make sure to not have any People on your life reports that didn´t agree to have their pics / Video footage made available to the public.

Whoops. I misread your post the first time and had to edit.

Using periscope is no different than recording video and posting it on YouTube or taking pictures and posting them on an Internet message board.

I would probably just film sail away, meet & mingle, ship activities, maybe some food porn but probably not the ports unless they have wifi.

Can you give us all tips on how to take a picture on a cruise ship or pretty much anywhere there is a crowd and not have any people in your picture?

I had heard that the ship's wifi wasn't quick enough to permit streaming, especially real-time audio-visual. Is that incorrect?

Iluvcrusin just streamed Oasis for a week. Oasis did get an upgrade to her Internet. I would imagine you are correct that there are some shops not capable to stream live.

And no differently, you're not supposed to post video and pictures of people that didn't give you permission to do so.

If you intend to disregard people's desire to NOT have their faces and the faces of their children plastered all over the internet, then perhaps you shouldn't be too surprised if your phone "accidentally" ends up overboard.

I don´t know periscope, so maybe I have misunderstood it from your description. As I understood it Periscope is live Streaming.

This would be a big difference to posting Pictures or you tube Videos online.

With posting Pictures or you tube Videos it´s not live and there is a Chance to Review and if necessary edit to not Show People that have not agreed to have their Pictures online. This would hardly be possible with live Streaming.

I can tell you, You would never get my permission to have my pics / Videos online and I´g go so far to try any legal way to prevent it.

You are missing the Point. It´s not about taking a Picture when there is a crowd and not have any People in them.

It´s no Problem to take the Picture. The Problem arises when you publish that Picture, especially online, without consent of the People in the Picture.

I don't know where these ideas come from.

The laws around this in most countries, including the US are that if you are filming/taking photographs in a public place, there can be no expectation of privacy from people who are also in that public place. While a ship is private property, the Royal Promenade or pool decks, for example, are considered as public places, where you cannot expect privacy.

If someone is taking a photo/videoing on the Royal Promenade (and have not been asked to stop by the owners or their agents - e.g. the staff/crew), then if you happen to appear in one of those pictures/videos, then tough luck.

The law around need people's consent to publish the photos only applies to where the photographer is publishing for commercial use - e.g. to include in an advertising campaign, or a book.

People seem to have this false idea that photographers need permission to photograph them/their kids in public, and need written authorisation to share those photos on a website - this is false.

Using a random photo from the internet that I found as an example:

CIMG1099.jpg.html

Besides the main subject of the photo, there are at least 10 other people in the picture (including a child) who are not taking part in this particular picture. There is nothing illegal about this photo, or about sharing it on the web. The photographer was not obliged to get permission from all those others to either take the picture or share it, as long as he was not doing so for commercial gain.

You are absolutely within your rights to ask someone not to take a picture of you - but if they refuse, they're not breaking any laws, just being rude (which sadly isn't a crime). Carrying out threats to destroy/damage their personal property (throwing their phone overboard) IS a crime.

Simple recap so everyone is clear:

  • Anyone can take a picture/video of you/your kids when you're out in public and have no expectation of privacy.
  • No-one needs your permission to publish photos/videos of you/your kids on the internet unless they are selling the images (and even then there are exceptions for news reporting, for example).

You are allowed to take pictures in public, where there is no expectation of privacy. That's why you see the local news teams at the mall, etc. They don't need permission. On a side note, geesh, lighten up. Villian, you do you! :D:D

Lol, thanks Maureen! Good to see you posting again. Hope all is well. I'm dying to read another one of your hilarious reviews. Maybe I'll go back and read an old one in the mean time.

I wasn't even going to post in this thread again because of these ridiculous "you need permission" statements but when I saw you post here I had to respond.

LOL, You know I got your back! I have 2 cruises planned, I keep telling myself I have to finish my Divina review before I go on my next....

We got my Mom and stepdad interred at the MA National Cemetery last week. She left me a little money and I think the perfect way to honor her is with an aft balcony on the Freedom. :D:D

And yes, please finish the Divina review!
