Going to Naples: 1/2 day in Pompeii, what to do with other 1/2 day?

My wife and I will be in Naples from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on a Monday in September. For the first half of the day, we are taking a train ride to and DIY tour of the Pompeii ruins for a few hours.

Does anyone have suggestions for what we can realistically hope to do with the rest of the time in port? We would be most interested in seeing a little taste of authentic Naples (restaurants, shops) but also would not want to miss any must-see attractions. We're in our 30s and don't mind lots of walking (as long as we don't come close to missing the ship!)

On a related note, if you have any recommendations for authentic Naples pizza within < 1 mile of the cruise port, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Rather than take the train all the way to the last stop in Naples, Porta Nolana, get off at the next-tio-the-last stop, Garibaldi, and switch there to the metro line 1 (see map here: http://www.anm.it/images/stories/PDF/mapparetemetronuova.pdf).

If you are interested in the archeological history (including items taken from Pompei) go to the Museo stop and check out the archeology museum. If not, get off at Dante and walk toward Via Tribunali and enjoy old Naples.

Some possible stops include Capella San Severo, with one of the most stunning sculptures you'll ever see: http://www.museosansevero.it/en/

It's an easy, downhill walk from this area back to the port (about one mile).

We're going to Naples in November and olanned to do a half day in Pompeii too. Does anyone have any tips on seeing the Blue Grotto? Is that a possible partial day activity?

Yes, it's possible. You can see Pompei in the morning, then get on the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento where you can get a boat out to Capri. Be sure to purchase your return ticket to Naples before getting on the boat to the Blue Grotto as they can and do sell out during the high season.

Do note that there's a big gap in ferry times in the middle of the day, between 11:45 AM and 1:10 PM.

When you are making your plans for what you can accomplish in a day in Naples, be sure to factor in the time for transportation and give yourself a bit of a cushion.

It takes about 40 minutes to get from the Naples Porta Nolana station to Pompeii on the train. And from Pompeii to Sorrento (to catch the ferry to Capri) it takes another 30 minutes. And of course, you may end up waiting nearly half an hour for a train if you happen to just miss one.

The hydrofoil from Capri to Naples (or vice versa) is about 45-50 minutes.

The hydrofoil from Sorrento to Capri (or vice versa) is about 20 minutes.
