Will a guaranteed cabin be assigned before embarkation?

We've only done guarantee once. We booked only 3 weeks out & when I logged in to my CCL account the next day a cabin had been assigned. However, it is always possible that you have to wait until you get to port, according to CCL phone rep.

So, I would just keep checking your account until you see an assignment. If you don't have one before you leave, you will just have to get tags at the port.

Is this even possible in a post 911 world? Generally reservations must close within a few days of sailing because the roster is sent to homeland security for screening.

This is absolutely false. I have called Carnival at 9 am on day of departure several times and was onboard by 2 pm same day. Used to do this a lot when I lived 10 minutes from port and had a few days off from work.
