hipquest Posted September 22, 2005 #1 Share Posted September 22, 2005 I have been to France and was given the best advice. Always greet shop keepers on arrival and say good-bye when you leave, all in French, of course. While I do not speak French I learned a few phrases and was glad I did. We were treated very nicely. My question, is this also the way to go in Martinique?
pomliane Posted September 29, 2005 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2005 Yes, it's the same in Martinique. People appreciate that the one coming in the shop says hello (bonjour) and goodbye (aurevoir).

I look forward to visiting this lovely island. :)
pomliane Posted September 30, 2005 #4 Share Posted September 30, 2005 You're welcome!! And, Bienvenue en Martinique!;)
TikiTodd Posted October 5, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 5, 2005 I agree and would also add that making transactions in euros was preferred to US dollars. They'll take the dollars, but don't deal in them so much, so making change is difficult for the smaller shop keepers.
LMCAT123 Posted October 5, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 5, 2005 Being polite in Martinique works great, but it also works just fine to be polite to shop keepers in other places too :-) Most everyone prefers courteous customers !!
pomliane Posted October 7, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 7, 2005 you're right!!! there's a change on the main street netx to the handycraft maket on the savanne place. But most big shops (and of course duty free) take dollars
ChrisFromOxford Posted October 10, 2005 #8 Share Posted October 10, 2005 Do the shop keepers accept credt cards...master card or american Express?
pomliane Posted October 11, 2005 #9 Share Posted October 11, 2005 yes most shops accept credit cards (visa, master card, CB). American Express too but less often. But forget credit cards on spice, fruit or handicraft markets. Use cash.:D
