When they run out of hurricane names

Hurricanes are not the only tragedy where you have to walk away from your home wondering if it will be there when you return. I grew up during WW2 in England and believe me I know what it is like to be bombed out of a house and have to live in shelters. We couldn`t take 3 days of food and water...there wasn`t any. So don`t preach about who can laugh at what. The only way England could survive is by keeping a good outlook and remembering how to laugh.......jean

Oh please. Name one. Name the last one. I can't remember the last one that hit the Boston area, but I'll call my mother or sisters or brother and ask them ... they've lived there all their lives. I lived there for more than 30 years. I know there was ONE severe hurricane in the early 50s ...

Tell me how many people in the Boston area have hurricane shutters? I am willing to bet you don't know anyone.

Don't trivialize what has happened to the people down here and in Louisiana by claiming Boston has had severe hurricanes.

How about some good-natured jesting about serial killers? AIDS? Cancer?

The point is, it's not funny.

NOT FUNNY.

You don't have to be overly sensitive to feel insulted when someone makes light of a serious situation.

Anyone who isn't living in a cave or under a rock has seen the devastation in Louisiana and Mississippi.

I've seen it first-hand in Florida.

I don't find the light-hearted approach to be very compassionate.

I hope none of you ever have to walk away from your home to seek shelter from a hurricane, and as you turn the key look back and wonder if you'll have a house to come home to.

I hope you never have to make the decision of what to take and what to leave behind ... your scrapbooks, your kids' high school diplomas, the family Bible ... because you can't take a lifetime of memories and pack them into your car.

I've done that -- and it is a life-altering experience, let me tell you.

While I'm sitting here watching the news waiting for Rita I decided to check the boards for amusement.

I did find the OP's list amusing.

In Surfside, TX (a town guaranteed a dousing from storm surge alone) a person had boarded up his house. On the outside he spray painted, "For Sale. Must close in 24 hours."

On another house, "We only like Rita with salt."

I think people see things differently, and some people need to laugh...I needed that today.

The best irony so far is that yesterday a friend of mine at college who just relocated from NO was telling hurricane jokes while we waited for word that the university was officially closed. He was worried about the Houstonians who may be upset about the impending storm.

There were some students from NO who were upset...other who laughed along with him.

It all depends on perspective, and no offense was meant.

Right now I'm just happy that my sister and her family are safe in TN (she finally got through since cell phone service is iffy). I'm happy that my best friend is safe at her MIL's house in AR with her family. They may lose everything...but they will be ok.

This isn't my first natural disaster...I've loss much over the years, but the good Lord has seen fit to keep me safe, I trust He will again.

My point is (finally) that I'm glad there are those who can make me smile and remind me that there are things to be thankful for regardless if it's a hurricane, a blizzard, an avalanche, a fire, a flood.....

Best wishes,

~e

Humor is therapedic for alot of people in lots of life's struggles. Yes, people lost everything including family members. It is tragic and I don't think anyone was laughing or making fun of it. But humor plays a major part in recovery.

This country needs healing, some parts more than others, some people more than others. I thought the op was funny. I have family and friends affected by both hurricanes. I still laughed at the OP's listing.

Subparagraph 345 C 2

STATES:

If the pending Hurricane or storm does not have a name from the original list posted at the first of the year it is not allowed to come close to or land in Florida and must turn around and go home..........

Levity is what allows us Floridians to survive this time of the year.....

I've never been through a hurricane (yet)... but I've had part of a house disappear in a tornado while I was inside, and I was in the middle of the Ohio blizzard of '78 and saw a lot of suffering while volunteering with the Red Cross... And I'm STILL chuckling over that list of names.

I don't think anyone here wishes to see any more names used for hurricanes this year, but the question of "what do they do if" has certainly crossed my mind. I just wasn't clever enough to come up a cute list. Some people spend WAY too much time in the shower...:D

I thought this thread was about the names the weather service named hurricanes with, not anyone making light of the tragedy they may or may not have caused ???

We live in California and have been through many Fires and Earthquakes, I cant begin to tell you how many jokes I have heard about "Shake n Bake".

I think this world speaks for itself, when we are needed to help we are there, when its time to relax and relief, we try and find the humor in our lives to keep going until the next time. I dont think anyone here meant any harm to anyone and just needed some relief.

There is way too much tragedy in life to spend one second fighting with others about it IMHO :)

Yes, there are other things to joke about, and we joke about them too, to keep our spirits up. Please don't think we're callous and uncaring when we take a moment to fool around a bit.

Although we're so far away, my town had 500 cots set up in the convention center for Katrina evacuees. Only 79 came, and they were moved to better housing within a few days. My DH and I both went through CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Training) and are spending part of the weekend volunteering for the Save a Life Saturday the local Red Cross is putting on. We have been watching the news especially closely regarding the evacuation efforts at the two Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston and Houston, which we spend many hours and dollars supporting, along with the 20 other Shriners Hospitals. My DH, who is lucky to be retired, spends every day helping to get children with serious burns or orthopedic problems transported to the hospitals (all of which are far away from here) and getting telemedicine technology started up so kids can be treated locally. Because he is a board member of the LA hospital (traveling to LA once a month at our own expense), we have gotten frequent email updates on what is going on around the country this month. The stories of distress, relief and offers of help coming from all corners of this nation are just amazing.

But I'd still rather laugh than cry. :)

I would suggest that if you and your DH are working with any evacuees from Rita, be sure and share your "humorous" names for future hurricanes with them...I would imagine they could use a laugh, since everyone seems to think they are so funny....

I love how several people here feel the need to trot out their "credentials" in order to justify their behavior.

I started to read this thread and am appaled by it.. Think about it would you like to have the name Katrina right now or Rita being known as KILLER STORMS.. I feel that they should just number the storms like this:

Year / Month / storm #

2005 / 09 / 02

This way no one has to feel bad about having a storm named after them that might be a KILLER STORM.

Sorry if I got up on my soap box this morning but ( I'm not going to even go there) it's just the way I feel...

Thanks, Mike--I think you have an excellent idea...I have a friend named Karla and she spent most of her formative years being asked "oh, just like the killer hurricane, eh?" a few dozen times of that and it really gets old....

Hmmm, I know a couple of Rita's... One would never be mistaken for a killer storm, but the other one...

*LOL*

I know what you are saying Grumpy. I went out with a girl named Katrina in High School. And since all this has happened I have had this great dirty joke about the connection *LOL*

I honestly do not believe anyone here would be so cruel to find humor at the loss of life and property these poor people have experienced.

Like someone else has said, humor is very theraputic and a defense mechanism.

but honestly if joking and enjoying things is not proper, than shouldn't you be doing something other than posting on a CRUISE message board...

Amen to that. This is a CRUISE message board, for the essentially frivolous purpose of discussing unimportant and lighthearted topics associated with having fun, among folks who clearly have electricity, computers, food, water, money to blow on vacations, and enough spare time to waste a little (a lot, in some cases). It's not a church, a fallout shelter, a hospital, a mortuary, a relief center handing out water, or any place where serious work is to be done. I just know we all act appropriately and seriously where the situation calls for it.

Now please excuse me, I have to go watch M*A*S*H, Hogan's Heroes, and some old Bob Hope USO shows.

Discussing the matter of the names used to identify tropical storms, hurricanes, tornadoes (cyclones), etc. in a non-serious way is, in my opinion, not equivalent to discussing the associated disasters in the same way.

However, my opinion is not what matters; it's the impact on the attitudes and emotions of some of our members that matters. For that reason, I'm closing this thread and asking that the subject be deferred to a more appropriate time.

Thanks for your understanding.
