Docked Ship Cell Carrier, is it turned off ??

Recommended Posts

Still confused by this. Going on a cruise soon where will be in New England and the Maritimes.

If were on the ship while its still docked and we use our cell phone, will we pick up the carrier that the ship uses? Or is it such that RCCL turns this off so we would pick up the local area carrier?

Regards

From what I understand, no. The ship turns off its cell tower when it is in range of the land-based cell system. If you use your cell phone while the shipped is docked, you'll should be communicating with the cell towers on land.

This, but you should check which Provider you are connected to, just to be sure. Sometimes you can be in range of a land-based Tower, but still connected to the ships Tower. You can also Chose the Network in your phone Settings.

The ship's cell tower is shut off approximately 12miles from shore. You should be able to pick up local cell signal if the ship is cruising close to the shore line.

Just remember to turn off your data when picking up ship's cell signal 'Cellular at Sea'.

As soon as we see land (usually when we wake up every morning) we turn our cell phones off airplane mode and pick up whatever the local carrier is on land. T-Mobile doesn't charge for international data/texting so I didn't worry about any roaming charges when cruising to Europe last year or in the Caribbean this spring.
