Wheelchairs and tipping

We will need a wheelchair in some of the airports for our trip next week. Can someone tell me approximately how much tip to give to the attendant? My husband used a wheelchair after his hip replacement when transferring at Heathrow and the attendant refused to accept a tip, said it was part of his job.

Tipping depend upon the country you are in. In a lot of places the airport staff who are transferring you are paid by the airlines and are not tipped unlike in many U.S. Airports

Here in the states we tip $5 to the attendant who assists with my mom. In some cases we have given more when the person has gone above and beyond.

In Stockholm our wheelchair attendant also refused a tip - likewise in Heathrow. But the attandant at Dulles in the US happily took our $5 tip.

The staff at the airport will not accept tips. The staff are well paid by the airline and it is their job to get you safely to the aircraft. These are not red caps but airline staff who are hired to provide support services. When I travelled with my elderly Aunt it was only in the U.S. that we encountered anyone expected or even accepted tips.

 

In some counties individuals with disabilities must be provided with equal access to services and this includes accessing aircraft.
