Can someone explain the difference between this HAL forum and a roll call.

 

This part of CC is about HAL in general while the roll call section is about a specific cruise. The roll call section allows passengers to "meet" one another before the cruise, share information, and potentially arrange or organize joint activities either on the ship or in a port.

The email you received when you signed up for the CC should have described the Roll Call forums. This thread on 'What is a Roll Call and how do I find mine' should help:

... but CC does not agree not to share Roll Call info with its Travelocity/Expedia owner and other 3rd party vendors ... so CC/T/E are "free" to use Roll Call Member info for their own marketing purposes and to sell it to other 3rd party vendors, as well - that concerns me enough that I do not join CC Roll Calls, but, hey, to each his/her own ...

This is untrue in several respects.

 

To start, Cruise Critic has no affiliation of any kind with Expedia or with Travelocity.

 

Second, our privacy policy is very clear. A link to that policy appears on every page in every Cruise Critic forum. In case you can't find it, here's a link: Cruise Critic Privacy Statement.

Third, Cruise Critic never provides any information about any of our members to anyone without the permission of the member.

 

Fourth, "harvesting" of email addresses of members is not possible except when a member voluntarily posts his/her email address in a post, whether ob a roll call or on a regular forum. There is no other way any third party can determine the email address of a member.
