Beaches: Best ones and access from port

Hi. We will be in Martinique in January. From what I can it's like visiting France, and given that we don't speak French, we're trying to decide whether it's best to go to the beach on on our own or to go with the cruise ship. What are the best beaches to go to if you like to swim? snorkel? What's the best way to get there from port? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

We like going to Martinique but find it easier to book a shore excursion with the ship. :)

I was in Martinique last year and it was a holiday, everything was close!

this time we will take the ferry to the beach.
