Are the machines coin operated in US currency?

 

Or do they use tokens charged to OBC like the machines aboard the Pacific Princess?

They normally use quarter . It is $2 per load of wash and the same for dry. Princess is converting over the use of the room key for charges for washing and drying. Charges charged to your room account.

I'm hoping to avoid potential hassle with TSA over the quarters.

 

I brought 3 rolls with me for the Pacific Princess cruise, & TSA searched my handbag prior to boarding the flight.

 

Turned out that I did not need coins, because they were using tokens.:)

On the Emerald Princess last month, we purchased quarters at the Passenger Service Desk. They were pre-counted and in an envelope in $10 amounts same as a roll of quarters. There was also a change machine in the laundry room. So you really don't have to travel with the weight of rolls of quarters unless you choose to.
