Onboard Bill Currency Question

Hey folks,

my first time cruising with NCL is coming up on Dec 12, 2015 on the Escape. I'm a Canadian traveller and when I booked the cruise it was charged in Canadian dollars at a better exchange rate than the banks and credit card companies. Our service charges have been pre paid in Canadian dollars as well.

At the end of our cruise is there an option to have our onboard bill in Canadian dollars at the NCL exchange rate?

Unfortunately not. Your credit card will be charged in US dollars

I guess the other option is to purchase onboard credits (looks like the exchange rate right now 11%) and use those credits to pay the bill.

11% is a lot better than the current ~30% credit card exchange rate.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. It is what I did recently when our exchange rate was fixed at a decent rate.

For info, from what I have been able to tell (in the UK at least), the exchange rate seems to be set at the time of booking. Each of my booked cruises uses a different rate which I don't think changes over time. It opens options like this up if you book at a time when the rate is good, but can work the other way.

I suggest you see the thread related to the current Canadian exchange rate. Things have changed dramatically in the past several months and everything depends on the terms under which you booked.

If indeed you do have a favourable exchange rate, buy as much on board credit as you can afford and even with the 3% ding cashing it in at the casino you will come out ahead. You can use it for all of your on shore spending.

Thanks for the link. I'll look through that thread. We booked our cruise in February 2015 with an NCL exchange rate at 11%.

Thanks for the link. I'll look through that thread. We booked our cruise in February 2015 with an NCL exchange rate at 11.1%.

Definitely buy more on board credit than you need. Load up. Cash out what is left at the casino and change it back to Canadian at home at a profit.

On board currency is usually in US dollars . They have an option that they do the conversion and charge you directly in Canadian. Let your credit card do the conversion. The optional service is usually about 5% above the bank rate.

If you want you always pay off the bill in cash if so inclined.
