Amtrak to Carnival dock in New Orleans--hotel question

Hello all! I'm booking our very first cruise for my mother's 80th birthday.

 

We'll be arriving by Amtrak from Birmingham the evening before. Can anyone recommend decent-yet-economical hotels that are convenient to both the train station and the dock? Or can you tell me what neighborhoods those are in, to make searching easier? How much do taxis generally cost? Thanks!

 

(And BTW, where is everybody getting those cute countdown images in your sigs? I want one!)
