mississauga Posted January 3, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 3, 2016 Hi, we will be docking in Heraklion, Crete in May. What are some of the sights we should look to do in and around Heraklion? What is the best transportation to take for DIY? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. TIA
iancal Posted January 3, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 3, 2016 We have been to Crete several times, most often for a week at a time. What to do? It really depends on your preferences. Knosos is fairly close. Alternatively there is Agio Nicolas or Chania and points inbetween. You could rent a car and tour for a day. Lots of different places in either direction down the coast or inland, to the other side of the island. There is an Avis car rental at the port. It may show as being downtown but it was moved to the port. We found out when we picked up a car this past September. Driving is easy. Just rent from a reputable agency. Not really much in Heraklion itself. Getting out of town from the port area is also a snap...nothing to worry about. Best to do some research on day trips from Heraklion since there are many options. susanpayne Posted January 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2016 Are you on the Vista in May? We are trying to plan that same port for the inaugural cruise.

susanpayne Posted January 10, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2016 We are as well. Thought it might be a good beach day of the weather is good. Have you booked Athens yet? Working on that one today thinking of the PK tours.
JulesAS Posted February 1, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 1, 2016 Heraklion has a Fortress and Old Harbor area. It also has the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. You can venture out just a bit to Knossos which is worth it. Once you are there you can hire a student guide for about 10E per adult. The tour takes about an hour and then you can walk around and take pictures at your leisure. If you have young kids there is Dinosauria which my six year old loved. The Crete aquarium was good also and he loved that. They are close to each other, Cretaquarium Thalassocosmos Here are Heraklion market days and where: · Monday: Kaminia · Tuesday: Alikarnassos · Wednesday: Mastabas (Panayitsa) · Thursday: Patelles · Friday: Therissos · Saturday (main market): Patelles
