How Safe is Peru?

We spent a week in Peru before and during a trip to Machu Pichu. In that time we saw no street beggars and no one troubled us at any time. Peruvians seem to be wonderful people. I understand that some arts of Callao can be problematical but always use common sense. WRT altitude sickness, several on our trip found the side effects to prescription drugs so debilitating that they stopped taking then. Stay hydrated.

Would you please elaborate on the prescription drugs that your travel companions were having issues with?

We've used Diamox (acetazolamide) through the years on trips to the Rocky Mountains and other than the frequent urination, we just stay hydrated and never had any issues that that drug.
