Venice train or bus to Trieste

Has anyone taken a train or bus to Trieste from the Venice airport?

 

How much is the cost and do tickets have to be reserved or purchased ahead of time?

I've done this a while ago. You can take ATVO airport bus to Venezia Mestre station and then local train to Trieste from there. No need to buy in advance as its local train and rarely discounted (unless its a faster one which can be sold at discount). Trip is close to 2 hrs; can check schedules and cost on trenitalia.com If you are taking cruise from Trieste walk from train station to pier is about 20 min. BTW my train broke for 1 hr and I almost missed my cruise.
