BND Posted March 12, 2016 #26 Share Posted March 12, 2016 (edited) We have stayed on the ship in the DR and said we would stay onboard in Belize if we ever went back. In Belize we did a ruins tour so we've seen the town and driven north, but nothing else really appeals to us, plus the port is barricaded off for a reason. Staying onboard means a nice, quiet day. We read, have a leisurely lunch and relax. We always get off in Cozumel (been there at least three times) and get a taxi into town and have lunch at Pancho's and then do some shopping. We did an all inclusive at a beach on one trip. Cozumel is a different place than Belize. Edited March 12, 2016 by BND
thesawch Posted March 12, 2016 #27 Share Posted March 12, 2016 I've been over and over the excursions in Belize and we are just not feeling it. I have never stayed on a ship at a port so I am wondering what I should try on the Independence while most are out and about. Are all of the fun things still open like flowrider, rock climbing wall, etc. during a port day? Belize is a dump. Good choice to stay on the ship and relax
jswerve1974 Posted March 12, 2016 Author #28 Share Posted March 12, 2016 (edited) When we were in Belize we rented a condo on Ambergris Caye and had a golf cart. When we went from Ambergris Caye to Caye Caulker by water taxi we just walked around. Check here..... http://caribya.com/caye.caulker/rental.cars/ Thank you. I may look into taking a ferry to Caye Caulker and renting a 6 person golf cart. It will be my myself, wife, and 3 grown children. Looks like it's about $80 dollars for a golf cart and $10 pp per ferry ride? Edited March 12, 2016 by jswerve1974
FSUNole Posted March 12, 2016 #29 Share Posted March 12, 2016 My roll call is painfully slow for some reason. Taking a water taxi to Caye Caulker looks fun. Any idea how to rent a golf cart there and how much they taxi and golf carts are? We're on the same cruise...

On ferry http://www.belizewatertaxi.com/book-now I also arranged a shuttle service to pick us up and take us to the water taxi. Be sure to tell the shuttle driver which island you are going to. Ambergris Caye is more developed, Caye Caulker is more laid back.

Are all of the fun things still open like flowrider, rock climbing wall, etc. during a port day? I feel the same way. This will be our 3rd time to Belize and I keep going over the different excursions and all I can think about is travel time. It will be just myself and my 17 yo son, so at this time we are leaning towards staying on the ship and enjoying no crowds. If you do decide to tender to port, go to the Thirsty Lizard and sign your name on a table. Laurie
geauxgirlgeaux Posted March 13, 2016 #32 Share Posted March 13, 2016 stayed on the ship once - it was lovely to have spce and peace in the pools. That being said Belize was amazing - probably the best trip we have ever done cruise or land. We took the river speed boat up to the mayan ruins - On the boat - sea part follwed dolphins- river part saw - monkeys, crocs, iguanas, bats, unusual birds (guide was fab stopped the boat and took us real close to all of the animals). As well as seeing/ hearing how the locals lived. We stopped 1/2 way for drinks/ food (but we didn't eat) then on the Mayan ruins - a small site not awe inspiring if you have done many others (we have toured most of the Yucatan) but good to see. Then bus back to port. It was a great day Did this as well. It was fun - bring a hat and water. Our whole family enjoyed it.
OBX-Cruisers Posted March 13, 2016 #33 Share Posted March 13, 2016 Belize is a dump. Good choice to stay on the ship and relax We were to Belize once and the cruise we were on had a rather long tender trip to shore. Wife decided to stay onboard. I went onshore, had a beer and was warned not to go outside the gates where I could see some pretty seedy characters hanging around. After about a half hour I just went back to the ship. If you don't go on a shore excursion in Belize, STAY ON THE SHIP.
Turtle05 Posted March 13, 2016 #34 Share Posted March 13, 2016 Spa treatments are usually cheaper in port. Also, if it's open, and you want to try it, the flow rider has much shorter lines in port. I took advantage of that on the Liberty several years ago in Labadee.

Justmekaren918 Posted March 13, 2016 #36 Share Posted March 13, 2016 I did Little French Key and the place was great. Staff nice. Food okay and drinks cold. Day pass covered 2 drinks, and then whatever they cost. Lots to do and nice place. Relaxing day. Glad I did it, but I doubt I would do it again. 30+ mins from pier. They transport you! Umarked van. Lately I have been a stay on the ship and enjoy the quiet. Paid for drinks and food. Now I believe the flow rider and wall are closed. WJ, latitudes are serving. Casino is closed. Enjoy. Cozumel I usually do Nachi CoCom. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk

DM_KidAtHeart Posted March 13, 2016 #39 Share Posted March 13, 2016 Flowrider is closed on port days? It is open on port days (at least on my sailings with a flowrider). However the hours are very limited and basically only skirt the edges of the time in port. Ex. from Liberty cruise compass while ship was in Belize Port hours - 8-4:30 Flowrider hours 9-9:30 Advanced stand-up surfing 9:30-10:15 Stand-up surfing 10:15-11:00 Boogie boarding 3-4:30 Boogie boarding 4:40-6 Stand-up surfing So it is open, but in my opinion, I just wish it was open more particularly between like 11 and 3. Thank you for the updated info and I believe the wall runs on weird crazy hours! I would think they would try to be open less wind when ship isn't moving. When moving these ships create wild wind fields; jmo! Then again currently I am not a person to try either. AustinCruise Posted March 13, 2016 #42 Share Posted March 13, 2016 We went to Bird's Isle for lunch. Got stuck in a huge downpour. Food was good. Had a fun day. Previous trip we did the flowrider. That was also fun.

This island has no power and it's just a great beach day. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
