Do we want progress??

We personally could do without all of it. As sad as it may seem, the hanging around the pursers area with other guests to check your bill, is all part of it for us. We get a beer, chat to some nice people whilst waiting and then get sorted out. The whole experience of cruising is just that "an experience". We love every minute of it. Can you tell we are flying to the US in 2 weeks!!!

It is a rare moment when I get to use the remote control at home. As a result I have not progessed to the point where I can use one onboard to do anything....

IGNORANCE IS BLISS...

I love almost everything about X... but I am disappointed with absence of movies. On RCCL and HAL there were 1 or 2 new movies every day for free.

I won't be ordering $8 movies that I can see cheaper at home.

If you ever find yourself on one of the larger (M-Class) ships, while the TV fare isn't any better, each has a pretty decent theaters if you're in the mood for a movie. I'm not clear why they don't also run these on the in-house TV system.

We are accustomed to gathering all the receipts we have stuffed into pockets, purses, nooks, and crannies throughout the day and checking them against the in-room account service before bed each evening. We then crumple and discard them. It is quick and easy to check a single day's expenditures (well, depending upon how "happy" our happy hour was!) rather than wading through line after line of "who drank what" for the past several days. It is also less of a surprise when the final statement arrives under the door...

Ergo, I would abandon everything on that list except the account service.

Although we have used some of the things mentioned, we wouldn't look elsewhere if there were no TV's in the cabins, period. The cell phone link and internet could be absence as well. Checking the acct is nice but Princess does not have it and I get a copy of my bill on one of the last nights for review, that works.

As a side note, we have gone up to a secluded, beautiful spot on the pacific coast many times (if interested www.tibercoveinn.com) Ten years ago there were no TV's or phones in the rooms. They installed both about 4 years ago, the phones I can understand, the TV's because, "Too many people were complaining about missing Sunday football."

You might as well...

Stay at home...fill the bath tub..get a hot plate, a mini frig, stock it with frozen food and some beverage (your choice)...roll in a portable TV and a laptop with a wi-fi connection.

The heck with getting on the ship....STAY HOME!!

All those things are what sociologists refer to as 'cacooning" where people want to avoid other people but still avail themselves of enjoyable things.

That was the #1 reason movie rentals became so popular..we got to stay home and not have to sit behind the lady with the big hairdo.

PLEASE, all you "PC" folks..I am not picking on ladies with big hair dos, if you are more comfortable, insert the word "person", for the really wacked out PC folks, insert the term, viable life form. and I am not complaining about Big Hair..some folks may have a genetic trait that causes their hair to grow only straight up into a beehive hairdo.

Somehow using the fact that Princess doesn't have some particular feature isn't, to me at least, a ringing endorsement. In fact it is many of the things that Princess doesn't have that sends people to other lines like RCI and Celebrity.:)

Here's my view:

I absolutely agree that I would never switch lines just because of the things noted, but since they are there, I do use them.

In-cabin gambling

I do use it once in a while to practice Blackjack as I am not that good. I do not do thi soften as the TV is usually not focused enough to see the cards across the room. (Or is it my old eyes?)

In-cabin acct review.

I also use this to check how much I've spent. In the old days I just went down to guest relations for a printout mid-week and that was enough for us.

In-cabin movies.

I could care less, but when I go with my friend and her college age daughter, they like to watch them

In-cabin room service ordering.

I never ordered off the TV. I always thought it might be helpful for the Sommelier if I ordered the wine on th eTV before dinner so he/she could get the wine bottle to our table so they wouldn't have to run around in the dining room so much, but I never get aroung to it. But, I may someday.

Cell phone link.

NOPE - don't use it.

Internet service.

OK. I confess! I used it extensively in the Mediterranean to check weather forcasts for the ports (we were traveling in late Oct) so I knew how to dress. Also, during football season, I am in a Yahoo pool so I have to go in once a week to load my picks. (OK, I'm bad)

News channel on TV.

NOPE, don't care. I do watch the football scores though. But the newspaper at Guest Relations gives the scores too. No problem.

Live sports on TV.

OK, if the Packers are playing, I will watch, but otherwise no...

In-cabin excursion booking.

I do like to see the video clips of a shore excursion that I am trying to decide if I want or not. But otherwise - no

There - you have it!

Through multiple threads, the justification for implimenting numerous changes is simply progress  .

If ALL of the following "improvements" were done away with, would this effect your choice of this cruise line....remember, not some, ALL!!

In-cabin gambling.

In-cabin acct review.

In-cabin movies.

In-cabin room service ordering.

Cell phone link.

Internet service.

News channel on TV.

Live sports on TV.

In-cabin excursion booking.

While I have used some of these services (out of laziness mostly) I, for one, could readily do without any or all of these "improvements", I think they do absolutely nothing to enhance my cruise...that's my vote.

While these items would not effect the choice of a cruise, the lack thereof may influence my decision on booking with Celebrity or another brand. Unless we are talking Cell phones - that is a different story altogether.

While none of the things you list is a deal-breaker for me if the ship doesn't have it, many of them make your life easier, even if you don't use them. If others are booking excursions and ordering room service ont eh tv, that means when you call for room service or stand in line for excursions, the line will be shorter. We liked ordering our room service on the tv because mischievous children could easily take your order from the door knob. I like checking my bill not only for accuracy but also to make sure I'm staying close to my budget for the trip. I think it would be a long line at the purser's desk the last day if that was the first chance folks had to challenge a charge.

It seems a bit curmudgeounly (sp?) to avoid any innovation, especially those that can please people without affecting your own experience of a cruise. I just hope and pray that as new ships are fitted with phone service that the service is limited to cabins and not public areas. If casinos have the technology to block cellphones in the playing area, so should cruise lines be able to limit them to private areas.

That's exactly how I feel. Which is probably why I won't be doing RCI any time soon. I don't want ice skating rinks, rock climbing etc. on my ships. I just want a ship...something to keep me afloat in the ocean (the love of the sea being my main reason for being a cruise addict) and someone to wait on me for a week (or two ;) )....that's all I need.
When I vacation, the last thing I want are things I can have at home...what's the point of going away???? I don't get it....but that's JMO.
Obviously many do not share that opinion or else all the amusement park type cruise ships wouldn't be doing so well.
Different strokes for different folks. :) As long as they leave a few ships more traditional, I'm happy. :D
