Bearau Posted March 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Does anyone else miss the crazy over the top designs of Joe Farcus. My wife and I loved exploring Carnival ships when he was the designer as every room was unique, sometimes gaudy but always colourful and weird to some extent. Elation, Miracle, Pride etc Nowadays every ship on most cruise lines seem to be the same carbon copy with the same colours, browns and gold's in varying shades. I for one wish they would show a little more imagination. Most feel and look like you are in a giant shopping mall. How about one every now and then that breaks the monotony. Something that takes you into another realm. Its the same on RCCL. If you have been on one Voyager class or Freedom class you have been on them all as they all look the same. TheTravelista Posted March 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I don't miss him at all. His style is so dated. The spaces he designed were fun then but looking at them now, they're an eyesore. All that neon....ugh. I much prefer the new designs of the Magic and onward.

mississauga Posted March 18, 2016 #5 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Don't miss him at all. A few ships with his design but not all. It was getting to be too much. Only 2 ships so far are not Joe Farcus design . I think the shopping mall feeling is RCCL. At least that's how we felt on Oasis of the Seas. jjmsbu09 Posted March 18, 2016 #6 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I'd agree the Sunshine was so boring. Just a lot beige. I like the crazy Farcus designs it was so much just being in the rooms and looking at the designs.

SadieN Posted March 18, 2016 #9 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Not so much his colors but I appreciate that I know which ship I was on. Been sailing Princess and all those ships look alike. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
jayscore Posted March 18, 2016 #10 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I considered his "architect on acid" form. His layouts first made you wonder, "What the hell was he thinking?" Then, later on, you think about what each area has to do with the next. Then, try to interpret the little things as you pass them each day. Hey, like it or not, you have just discovered art at a grand scale! Like it or don't, you were just influenced to expand your horizons on a ship. Do I like the schemes? Sometimes........;)
Cocochanel26 Posted March 18, 2016 #11 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I like the new decor better, the wild Vegas themed decor was ok for awhile, it just seems cleaner.
EdmundXXIII Posted March 18, 2016 #12 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Farcus' designs were insane, but in a wonderful way that made me feel that I had left normal life and stepped into a fantastical world. The non-Farcus Carnival ships are lovely but feel a little bit IKEA. His designs aren't things that I'd choose for my home or office. But I kind of appreciate an outrageous and over the top visual flair when I'm on vacation.
smyliecruising Posted March 18, 2016 #13 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) I think his ships are so creative and awesome!! It is so fun to look at each room and all the details! Ship exploring is an adventure. I loved the conquest! So artistic and creative. I really was in awe at his work even if I didn't love every room I appreciated it( I actually do love them all really). He's amazing. Edited March 18, 2016 by smyliecruising
ready2cruzagain Posted March 18, 2016 #14 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) Try sailing on one of his ships for 26 days and trust me, you would not miss him. The over the top, outdated, gaudy designs start getting to you. Edited March 18, 2016 by ready2cruzagain

I actually enjoy his work for the most part. When I'm on a cruise I want to feel like I'm in another world, and I want something different to look at and enjoy. I appreciate my mind being stimulated. His designs make for great conversation and keep things interesting :) Edited March 18, 2016 by jocko4279
cruzeluver Posted March 18, 2016 #16 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Not even a little bit. Gaudy and eye-searingly ugly aside, his interiors are incredibly dated looking now. I have no interest in returning to the 1980's. Even though I know his designs cost Carnival a pretty penny, they look incredibly cheap.
evandbob Posted March 18, 2016 #17 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) One of the early Carnival ships had (IMO) pathetic plastic palm trees in either the main dining room or buffet. I think it was about time that Carnival moved away from his weird designs. I liked the Magic and I'm looking forward to the Vista. Farcus was in style back when a male with long hair was considered a hippie commie draft dodger, and tattoos were a sign of rebellion. Everything changes...... Farcus and popart and the 60s/70s are over. Time to move along. Edited March 18, 2016 by evandbob

Cushing985 Posted March 18, 2016 #19 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I'm afraid I don't miss him at all. Every time I stepped onboard one of his ships it reminded me of all the weed I used to smoke back in the day!
HamSammie Posted March 18, 2016 #20 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I like them. If I wanted standard cookie-cutter designs with neutral colors, I would stay home and stare at everything else in the world.
Rare Tapi Posted March 18, 2016 #21 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) If you miss Farcus' designs, they are still alive and well on Costa. He's in charge of all new Costa ships decor. Looking at some photos and videos of Costa's newest ships, the Farcus touch is definitely evident. But to answer your question, the answer is no. As others have said, what was in 20-30 years ago is outdated now. His designs don't age well. Edited March 18, 2016 by Tapi

tdnosnhoj11 Posted March 18, 2016 #23 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I like it in certain areas, but not others. I would like the dining rooms, atrium, and hallways to be clean and classic and the casino, lounges, and other places of that nature to be loud and fun. I also like the Farcus design in the lido buffet area. I'm not there for a fancy meal, just to grab a bite and go. One thing I hate, though, are the neon flashing signs. Those are awful. crusinpsychRN Posted March 18, 2016 #24 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) I just can't stand the orange sofa's. And remember the purple snakes in the ceiling on Holiday? Purple grapes on Miracle. Edited March 18, 2016 by crusinpsychRN
jazm2011 Posted March 18, 2016 #25 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I'm with ya - I like all the interesting and craziness of his designs. One of the things I like to do on each cruise, usually the last sea day and early in the morning when most folks are still sleeping - is walk around the entire ship and take pictures. Some of the ships are much more interesting to photograph than others. And I sort of love all the craziness.
