Missing Joe Farcus

Does anyone else miss the crazy over the top designs of Joe Farcus.

My wife and I loved exploring Carnival ships when he was the designer as every room was unique, sometimes gaudy but always colourful and weird to some extent. Elation, Miracle, Pride etc

Nowadays every ship on most cruise lines seem to be the same carbon copy with the same colours, browns and gold's in varying shades. I for one wish they would show a little more imagination. Most feel and look like you are in a giant shopping mall. How about one every now and then that breaks the monotony. Something that takes you into another realm. Its the same on RCCL. If you have been on one Voyager class or Freedom class you have been on them all as they all look the same.

I don't miss him at all. His style is so dated. The spaces he designed were fun then but looking at them now, they're an eyesore. All that neon....ugh.

I much prefer the new designs of the Magic and onward.

I could not agree more! ;)

Don't miss him at all. A few ships with his design but not all. It was getting to be too much.

Only 2 ships so far are not Joe Farcus design .

I think the shopping mall feeling is RCCL. At least that's how we felt on Oasis of the Seas.

Not so much his colors but I appreciate that I know which ship I was on.

Been sailing Princess and all those ships look alike.

I considered his "architect on acid" form. His layouts first made you wonder, "What the hell was he thinking?" Then, later on, you think about what each area has to do with the next. Then, try to interpret the little things as you pass them each day.

Hey, like it or not, you have just discovered art at a grand scale!

Like it or don't, you were just influenced to expand your horizons on a ship.

Do I like the schemes? Sometimes........;)

Farcus' designs were insane, but in a wonderful way that made me feel that I had left normal life and stepped into a fantastical world.

The non-Farcus Carnival ships are lovely but feel a little bit IKEA.

His designs aren't things that I'd choose for my home or office. But I kind of appreciate an outrageous and over the top visual flair when I'm on vacation.

I think his ships are so creative and awesome!! It is so fun to look at each room and all the details! Ship exploring is an adventure. I loved the conquest! So artistic and creative. I really was in awe at his work even if I didn't love every room I appreciated it( I actually do love them all really). He's amazing.

You are so correct! I actually enjoy his work for the most part. When I'm on a cruise I want to feel like I'm in another world, and I want something different to look at and enjoy. I appreciate my mind being stimulated. His designs make for great conversation and keep things interesting :)

Not even a little bit. Gaudy and eye-searingly ugly aside, his interiors are incredibly dated looking now. I have no interest in returning to the 1980's. Even though I know his designs cost Carnival a pretty penny, they look incredibly cheap.

One of the early Carnival ships had (IMO) pathetic plastic palm trees in either the main dining room or buffet. I think it was about time that Carnival moved away from his weird designs. I liked the Magic and I'm looking forward to the Vista.

Farcus was in style back when a male with long hair was considered a hippie commie draft dodger, and tattoos were a sign of rebellion.

Everything changes......

Farcus and popart and the 60s/70s are over. Time to move along.

If you miss Farcus' designs, they are still alive and well on Costa. He's in charge of all new Costa ships decor. Looking at some photos and videos of Costa's newest ships, the Farcus touch is definitely evident.

But to answer your question, the answer is no. As others have said, what was in 20-30 years ago is outdated now. His designs don't age well.

I like it in certain areas, but not others. I would like the dining rooms, atrium, and hallways to be clean and classic and the casino, lounges, and other places of that nature to be loud and fun. I also like the Farcus design in the lido buffet area. I'm not there for a fancy meal, just to grab a bite and go.

One thing I hate, though, are the neon flashing signs. Those are awful.

I'm with ya - I like all the interesting and craziness of his designs.

One of the things I like to do on each cruise, usually the last sea day and early in the morning when most folks are still sleeping - is walk around the entire ship and take pictures. Some of the ships are much more interesting to photograph than others. And I sort of love all the craziness.
