cruzin Phillis Posted March 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2016 I booked my cruise in the wee hours of this morning. When I check my account, carnival charged my card 287 instead 250. I called and the representative says that they only charged the 250. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this. Hopefully the extra 37.00 charge will roll off when the payment hard post to my account.
lizardhowson Posted March 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Never had Carnival charge more or less than the deposit shown on booking info or Carnival website.
Rare Tapi Posted March 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Was there travel insurance offered that you forgot to decline? If so, you may have been charged for it in addition to the deposit.
Hog Rider Posted March 18, 2016 #4 Share Posted March 18, 2016 Does it matter? You owe more than $250 for the cruise.

Doggielover68 Posted March 18, 2016 #8 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) Did you book directly through Carnival or did you go through a TA that charges a fee? This is definitely a possibility if you booked outside of carnival. I booked through a TA the first time and was unexpectedly charged an extra $25 or so. As for the travel insurance, sometimes it is added automatically and you have to opt out if you don't want it. KoalaWala Posted March 18, 2016 #11 Share Posted March 18, 2016 This is because you used a debit card. Your issuing bank charges a % of the amount and adds it to the total charge. Once payment is posted and finalized, that difference would be credited back to the card.

KoalaWala Posted March 18, 2016 #13 Share Posted March 18, 2016 t's like if you paid for a hotel with a debit card, and the hotel bill was $300, you would see a charge for $330 or something. It's to cover incidentals or items that may exceed the amount the company is requesting. Because its not a credit card, it doesn't allow overdrafting. Same thing when you buy gas at a gas station, you may get a $50 charge when you only put $20 in gas. You need to wait for payment to post to get the amount refunded. A debit card in this case is no different than a credit card. The amount is the amount is the amount in the case of a deposit. There is no possibility of "incidentals" nor the need for a hold on the card simply to pay a preset amount. I have paid for 16 cruises using debit cards, credit cards, and gift cards and NEVER has this been the case. I'm sorry, but in this instance you are incorrect. firemanbobswife Posted March 18, 2016 #17 Share Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) They've been doing this a while. The bank considers Carnival in the same category as a hotel. Again, I have never had this happen and my most recent cruise was last month. It is not a hotel, no possibilities of incidentals and the only amount that they request is the flat out deposit. The incidental amount is set by the hotel, not the card issuer. Same as when going to the gas pump. Some stations charge your account for $1 and some put a hold for $100. It depends on the individual station on what they require. If Carnival did this, then my payments would be declined when using a gift card for my deposit because they are only in the preset amounts of $100 or $500 and I only pay what is required. Oh and this last time I paid it all with debit cards and had a balance due of like $19 and some change. Guess what was charged to my card (both initially and finally)? Just the exact amount. Nothing more. If your bank or credit card does this, then I would seriously get a new one. Edited March 18, 2016 by firemanbobswife

Right, and because not all debit cards are charged this extra percentage, it is not something on Carnival's part, but the issuing bank of the guest's debit card. Well I would run far away from any bank that did that. What are they hoping to do - make money off of fees by placing larger holds on unsuspecting people's money causing them to possibly overdraft? Sounds like horrible business practices to me. A Cruise line is not a hotel or gas station. I can see if you use your debit card ONBOARD then, yes, that is fine (but there's no way on earth I would ever do that). But to simply pay a preset amount such as a deposit or final payment no way. It's no different than going to the store.

They will tell you the excat charge and if there is any "hold" on the card. As a personal note, I can not see why anyone would use debit cards. Credit cards are much better protected and much less liability in case of fraud. The number one reason is MILEAGE!!!
KoalaWala Posted March 19, 2016 #22 Share Posted March 19, 2016 Yea I'm not sure what they are gaining from this except three days worth of interest on $37...I guess it adds up when you do it to a million customers.

If I book a casino hotel that the room is comped, they may hold $50. which I would lose if I did not show up. A regular hotel might hold a deposit, but never has, in my experience charged me for the room until I check in, at which time I may choose to pay with a different card or simply cash. And NEVER, have I seen a charge, or a hold, for gas at a station other than what ever amount I purchased. Carnival, I always book online. And never had any other charges than what was offered, deposit, partial payment etc... As someone else posted, some people on this thread need to seriously consider looking into other banks. I just rarely see Nacogdoches referred to. I was born there, but was raised in upstate NY. Still have some family there. Remember as a child, people asking me to spell it. Always could, and always will. By the way, spell check underlines it. As in not spelled right.:) From one that used to live in the "piney woods" Hello:)
