Copper Canyon?

We are considering a cruise that has a shore excursion to the Copper Canyon. My wife and I have problems on big stairs. What is it like getting on the train? How about the bus that goes from the ship to the train?

I did the land tour before using the cane, and I would not do it now. The train steps were difficult to climb even then. The bus was with steep steps, sort of an old school bus, and the seats were far from comfortable.

It is an experience, for sure. A 15 hour tour. The cruise line (HAL) warns you ahead of time that it is strenuous. Regular large busses take you to the train and pull up very close to it. The step up on the regular large bus is normal...1 or 2 steps. The train steps however are very high and they waste no time leaving.

We had police escorts for the 2 hour ride to the train (3am in the morning). My husband, a NYCPD stayed awake and said we went through every light. He was not feeling safe.

After the 6 hour train ride the school busses they use for transport to Copper Canyon are old and the step is very high. I had trouble with it so they said they would get me something else. They did ...A HUMMER.....even higher.

Finally after much humiliation I asked a guide (in Spanish) to pull me up from the step and my husband to assist in the back!! This last bus ride is no more than 10 minutes.

The walk up the hil of the hotel is inclined also. 50 minutes allowed for viewing and decent bathroom. Then they want you to board that Mexican bus again to go to the buffet stop...another 50 minutes.

Then reboard Mexican bus to get to 6 hour train ride and 2 hour nice bus back to port. Arriving back at 10:30 pm.

I had asked beforehand if a milk crate would be available for high steps. They said yes, but none were available on the trip. I would bring a portable folding step to assist the height.

It's a wonderful trip. I, who have the knee problem loved it, my husband however (NYCPD) did not....dusty, dirty and unsafe were some of his words. However, glad we did it and at least you are going with some idea of what you are in for....an adventure!
