Best choice of hotel in Stockholm

We arrive 2 days prior to boarding our ship. We have never been to Stockholm and would like to stay as close to the Old Town and major sites as possible. We currently have rooms booked at the The Eden Elite Park Hotel in Ostermalm, overlooking Humlegården Park, and I'm not sure about this location. I am also interested in the Radisson Blu Waterfront near the Central Train Station.

 

I am hoping that someone familiar with the city has some insight into these locations so I can make my decision.

The difference in walking time, from the two hotels you mention, to Gamla Stan is pretty small. It is only a few minutes difference and Elite Eden Park Hotel is located in a calmer/nicer area.

I cannot comment on the hotels themselves.

Personally I don't really like the modern concrete/glass jungle around the railway station. Eden Elite Park Hotel is located at the upper class district Östermalm and if you plan to use public transport (24 hour card recommended 115 Kr, 70 kr if you are 65 or older) it is just a few blocks from the hotel to either of the Östermalmstorg subway station entrances, possibly even closer than it is from Radisson Blu Waterfront to T-Centralen subway station. With he subway you can reach old town in just a few minutes.

Or have a nice walk through the city center to Gamla Stan. For example Sturegatan-Birger Jarlsgatan-Hamngatan-Kungsträdgården. Another longer option wold be Sturegatan-Kungsgatan an then pedestrian street Drottninggatan all the way down to Gamla Stan.

As for walking my recommendation would be Sturegatan-Birger Jarlsgatan-Biblioteksgatan (fancy shopping street)-Smålandsgatan-Norrmalmstorg-Kungsträdgården-Strömbron-Old Town.

There are several hotels in Gamla Stan itself. I haven´t tried any of them but have a look at http://www.bookings.com or some other site. You can select an area of search, such as Gamla Stan. It IS a níce part of the city.

 

The area around the Central Station isn´t as nice of course but it is convenient with lots of hotels and good travel links.

We stayed at the Nobis Hotel at the end of our Baltic cruise (July 2014). It's a fabulous location – we were able to walk everywhere – and a beautiful hotel, lovely breakfast and cafe. I would recommend confirming that you will get a quiet room. We were on the second floor on the side next to a nightclub, which was very noisy. The hotel management was extremely apologetic and would have moved us if we had been staying another night. Instead, they refused to let us pay for our room. First-class staff!
