Carry on luggage at Southampton

Having only boarded overseas, we're not sure whether there are any restrictions about carry on luggage at Southampton. Will a garment carrier (Antler type, to hold 3 suits/jackets) be OK ? Many thanks to all those of you who know so much !

If you've got a strong garment carrier, which it sounds like you have, you can put a label on it and put it with your suitcases for the porters to put on the ship. If you've only got the type that you get free from M&S when you buy a suit from there, you'll need to carry it on yourself. We've done both with both types of suit carrier.

As I understand it you can take as much carry on bags as you can handle. I would expect there might be an issue with anything that is too big for the x ray scanner though.

Ah,we'd overlooked the scanners ! Are they the same size / type of machine as at airport security ? (You see how naive we are ?)

Anything that will fit through the scanner (which a suitbag certainly would), can be hand-carried onto the ship.

 

We originally thought in this direction, when first cruising, but found it was burdensome and cumbersome to carry a heavy garment bag through the boarding process.

 

I learned that suits, trousers, shirts packed very nicely in the suitcase with tissue paper and/or large plastic dry-cleaner bags---just be sure the suitcase is fully-packed, so clothing doesn't slide and wrinkles can be avoided. On the whole, so much easier than trying to hand-carry a garment bag).
