cclacroix Posted April 2, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2016 Anyone have any experience in renting a car and just driving to the ruins yourself in Belize? This will be our first cruise and we didn't want to be stuck in a bus all day. Any advice will be helpful! Thanks! Alturia Posted April 3, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2016 (edited) We spent 2 weeks in Belize in January. One week was spent near the Guatemala border touring Mayan ruins and one week was spent on the coast. We used cars and drivers supplied by the lodges the whole time. The roads in Belize are in really bad shape. The main roads are 2 lanes - one lane in each direction. Terrible pot holes on the main roads, no shoulders at all and speed bumps that are very poorly marked. And the local drivers think nothing of driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid pot holes. You will see a car or truck coming toward you at high speed in your lane and then will swerve back into their lane after going around a pot hole just before you think you are going to crash head on. And once you are off the main rod you are onto some of the worst dirt roads we have been on. We usually rent cars and drive ourselves but were glad we did not in Belize. The guides and cars were not the expensive so I would look around for a private guide/car if you do ot want to sit on a bus. cruisemainiac Posted April 3, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2016 I would agree. There are places I would not want to drive and Belize is one of them.
