Paisley12 Posted October 15, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2005 This is my first cruise. Just want to know in lieu of calling ... can you text message? I have Verizon. My daughter seemed to have no problem text messaging me from India when she was there. Is it the same on the Eastern Mediteranean cruise. Oceania - Athens to Rome 5/1/06. Thanks! serene56 Posted October 16, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2005 when you are in a port--shouldnt be a problem. On the ship there is no tower so it wont work.
CaptData Posted October 16, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 16, 2005 It also depends on your phone and if you have a gsp chip. Check with your dealer to ensure your phone is capable in the region you are going.

Paisly12; Verizon uses a cellphone technology called CDMA. CDMA is only used in the US, Canada, parts of Mexico, as well a few Caribean islands. It is not used in the rest of the world. In order to have world wide roaming, you need a phone (and carrier) that uses GSM. In the US this would be Cingular and Tmobile in order to roam around the world. Your daughter obviously had a GSM phone in India as there is no CDMA there.
kitty9 Posted October 20, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 20, 2005 I have a Blackberry and it worked on all the islands. It has a quad band GSM and it works internationally. It's by far the best phone I've ever owned, and the international calling prices are great.
