Recommended Posts

We have never been to Langkawi, Malaysia before.

I was wondering what not to miss in Langkawi?? and what would you recommend doing here for the day??

Is there any private tour company's you would recommend??

Also has anyone done any snorkelling in Langkawi before??, if so is it any good there?

Any ideas / suggestions are very welcome :)

We land holidayed in Langkawi last year :)

After much research we made the decision to not swim at the beaches (some people still were, but not that many...), there are many many reports of jellyfish problems and from what I was reading they don't warn tourists properly and still offer boat trips out for swimming etc and many tourists have ended up in hospital from bad jellyfish (I can't remember now which type it was), I wasn't going to risk it travelling with two small kids and we were staying in an amazing resort with multiple pools anyway.

As far as activities for the day...the main tourist attraction is the skycab, well worth doing, amazing views, at the top you hop off and can go on the skywalk (glass bridge) and at the bottom is a tourist oriental village with plenty of shopping, eating etc, there were other things to do there too including an elephant ride park but we didn't have time!

Will second the skycab, the views are wonderful and you can see as far as the mountains of Thailand. Near the ticket office you can pay extra and have a guide escort you up and back and avoid the long lines of people waiting at various stops on the way. VIP treatment...but it was our 50th Anniversary. We spent 12 days on the island three years ago and have to agree re the stingers. They are seasonal but I would give swimming a miss. We hired a driver for the day and went round the island. He also waited for us while we went on the skycab. You can also do a trip via small long tail type boat around part of the island which includes the World Heritage "Kilim Geoforest Park". You stay in the boat for the whole trip and only stop off at a floating food stop. You can hire a boat and driver/guide on your own or go with a group. With the ship in port I would assumed both these excursions would be very busy.

We were there last week and just took a taxi to Cenang Beach and hung out for the day. Rented a chair and umbrella each and enjoyed a few water sports - parasailing, banana boat etc. The beach itself and the water were glorious, no jellyfish. The local people were lovely and we weren't hassled to buy stuff, they asked once and accepted a polite no with no argument.

I noticed one of the suggestions was an elephant ride but if you care about animal welfare I would avoid this type of entertainment. If you saw the torture these poor creatures endured to learn to accept people riding on their backs I'm sure people would think twice about doing it.

My interest started last year in Sri Lanka when I saw many elephants chained up in poor condition in Buddhist Temples.

Regards Elaine.
