Bucky3 Posted May 5, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 5, 2004 A plastic poncho to hang over everything. In the wind, an umbrella won't be much help - and I wore long underwear, the silky kind that fits well under jeans. I loved the ear muffs I bought in Juneau. Have a wonderful cruise. Alaska is so beautiful. Weather is totally unpredictable so just be prepared for whatever and you'll enjoy!

lephysteria Posted May 6, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Ok, you wanted an Alaska Cruise packing list, so I found a great bunch of lists at Cruise Diva's website, but when I posted the link, the domain turns into stars. jkrislc Posted May 6, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Because you'll be dressing in layers, plan on wearing some of your outer layers (e.g., sweatshirts) more than once to save on packing. Also, a light waterproof outer layer is a must. An easy way to accomplish this is to buy a poncho at Walmart that folds up into a thin wallet-sized package. You can find them in the sporting goods section and it will come in handy when it rains as it did for us in Ketchikan. Other options include a hat instead of a hood. I also found spray-on water repellant invaluable. I coated everything with it before I left and didn't have to worry about my hat, gloves, or shoes getting soaked. In addition, the $3-$4 can was much cheaper than buying new clothes. You can also get this at Walmart, and the beauty is that the water repellant simply washes out in the wash if you don't want to keep it that way. Enjoy! Coppertan Posted May 6, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 6, 2004 jkrislc, that's a great idea! I didn't know there was such a thing as a water repelant. Which dept. of Walmart would I find that? jimbug, I'm going on the Sapphire to Alaska also, and I've read quite a bit about the mosquitos...so you might want to be armed with a bugspray too. It's intended for shoes/boots, but is appropriate for any color fast garment. Worked great and kept the hiking boots dry even in the rain. GKR Posted May 6, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 6, 2004 And you can find a similar water-proofing spray in the camping department at Walmart. Intended for spraying on tents, etc. Works great. Be sure to take binoculars, and plan on buying the Alaska cruise companion book either before the trip or while on board. And lots of film or memory sticks for your camera. We took twice as many pictures as we expected to. But everyone here is right about layers! Gloves, hat, fleece all work well. Warm socks and shoes too. But you may well have 70 degree days too, so have some lighter clothing as well.
srphnx Posted May 6, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Confirmation letter from TA about the cruise you are taking next, it is very hard to come back from Alaska with nothing but work and real life to look forward to.
