Radiance Internet WIFI

We are cruising on the Radiance to NZ Jan 2017. We found last time that when in main ports, eg Auckland, we could get the free wifi in the city, but it was too slow to load much except email.

My son and daughter need to put in their university classes on a University website (with lots of graphics) whilst we are away. Is the internet on the radiance fast/reliable enough for this?

It seems weird the boat sell by the minute rather than per Mb which is standard for ISP's eg International Roaming data prepaid.

We were recently on Radiance and whilst we did get wifi in the cabin (and we were right on the aft) it was pretty slow and we just couldn't download (or upload) some things until we were in port and could find a decent wifi connection. It was fine for such things as Messenger and emails but uploading pics to dropbox took about an hour a picture and downloading our newspaper took an age - particularly the images.

However, it may be worth asking the question in a couple of months since Radiance is in for a drydock refit round about now and it may be that they upgrade the internet.

There is a 2 degrees shop very close to the port in Auckland - easy walking distance 4/34 Queen Street. They will give you a free travelers sim and $20 NZ will get you 1 gigabyte data with 1 month expiry for use throughout NZ. I did this a couple of weeks ago. If you put it in one of your phones, it can provide a 'hotspot' for your whole family when in port (not at sea). They are very helpful.

There are also a number of other telcos within walking distance.

Only if the internet has been upgraded to Voom will you be able to reliably upload large graphics files. Unfortunately, there is no publicly available schedule for Voom rollout. Also, Royal no longer sells internet access by the minute. It's all sold unlimited, in a minimum of 24-hour periods, bith on Voom and non-Voom ships.
