Day trip/tour from London to Duxford?

My DH and I are spending 4 days post cruise in London in early June. He wants to visit the Imperial War Museums in Duxford. Is anyone aware of a London tour company that does a day trip to this museum complex? If we do this on our own, should we plan to take the train to Cambridge or Whittlesford? Is there a tour company or taxi service from one of these locations that is recommended and can be pre-booked? Thank you for any advice, especially from those who have done this trip before.:)

I would take the train from Kings Cross to Royston (about 50 minutes) Pre-booked, the return fare should be around £28 each. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ (Look for a direct service with no changes if you can)

The taxi from there to Duxford looks to be around £8 each way prebooked. Try http://www.southcambstaxis.co.uk/.

As Bob's post.

Or if your hotel is convenient to Liverpool Street station you also have the option of trains from there to Cambridge - broadly similar fare & frequency, slightly higher taxi fare at the Duxford end.

Whichever train you take, ask for a "cheap day-return" rather than just a "return" - a day-return ticket costs little more than a one-way ticket.

If you want a very full day you might want to consider combining the Duxford Imperial War Museum with the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden aerodrome, near Biggleswade.

It's about 25 miles from Cambridge, or 19 miles from Royston (though unfortunately in the opposite direction to Duxford).

There's a direct train service to Kings X from Biggleswade station (only about 3 miles from the Shuttleworth Collection), though cheap day-return train fares don't apply if you don't return from the same station as your outward journey.

Bob++ and John Bull, thank you both for clear, helpful information and links for booking reservations. Your info was just what I needed. We are really looking forward to our visit to England, albeit much too short! Thank you, too, for giving so much of your time to monitor this CC site so thoroughly. You are helping so many to enjoy your country. The Queen should be "knighting" both of you:D!
